Sure thing, and while we're at it, let's have the players in the field ride donkeys, and all the batters wear clown suits. This was NEVER a serious game, but once the fans got involved, any aspect of true all-star competition was lost. The home run derby -- silly by any mature standard -- is the only real inter-league league comparison.

The Mets are not just as much on the hook with Ollie. The Braves owe Lowe $60 million over 4 years. The Mets owe Ollie $36 million over 3 years. Huge difference.

In 2012, the Mets will have $15 more to spend than they would if they had signed Lowe, and they will have saved $9 million over the past three years.

The Ollie signing has not turned out well so far, obviously. This article isn't meant to directly compare Lowe and Perez anyway, it is meant to point out that the Lowe signing hasn't been a great success either.

The Perez article I wrote is meant to instill some hope that he will be able to turn it around.

Lowe is better than Perez; no one is arguing this fact. Gut that doesn't mean the Lowe deal will turn out to be better than the Perez deal.

Lowe's FIP is about consistent with his career numbers, but his K:BB ratio is alarming. Ollie's advanced statistics don't really tell us anything we don't know, since we all know how much he's struggled (in a small sample size).

Lowe is going to have the better numbers this season, but I'd still rather have Ollie over the next two years than 37-39 year old Lowe for $15 mil over the next three years.

I don't understand how it can ever be too early to write an article that basically updates the scorecard on the Mets offseason. I'm not saying that the Braves signing Lowe was a bust; I'm merely saying that he isn't currently living up to his contract. Just like any mid-season article, I am judging this on half a season of baseball. This isn't a Derek Lowe eulogy, it's an assessment of his disappointing start.

As far as replacing Ollie with Lowe, I'm sure if the Mets had actually signed Lowe, he would be on the DL right now.

This piece wasn't pro-Ollie at all, although even you saying that suggests that you agree that Perez was probably the next best option.

You can't really know how replacing Perez with Lowe would actually have turned out. Obviously he'd be better, right now. Will that be the case at the end of the year, or have the Mets/Warthen destroyed Ollie? I thought Perez and Lowe would finish would roughly comparable numbers this year, and it'd be hard to expect Lowe to get better in following years. Arguably both contracts are a gamble, but Ollie's got an upside, while Lowe has a downside.

And for all the stats you can throw out there and claim are better, bottom line is that the Braves haven't won enough in Lowe's starts. Perez was injured, and badly coached in Spring and April this year. (Don't tell me he wasn't injured, with the way the Mets pitching performed in June, if he could pitch, he'd be here) While it's too early to evaluate the two against each other, Lowe certainly isn't looking like a clear win, and that says a lot given Perez's unperformance this year.

Don't look at ERA for evaluating a pitcher. Lowe's fielding independent pitching stats are much better than the inflated ERA suggests. His FIP is 3.72 and his tERA is 3.55. These are much better judges of actual performance and predictors of future performance. Meanwhile Ollie is at a 6.03 FIP and 6.54 tERA. Replace Ollie with Lowe and the Mets are likely in first place, despite all their injuries. Bottom line, it's way too early to be writing blatantly anti-Lowe and Ollie-defending things like this.

Wow, someone has in for David. I agree with you JoeD yet I am seeing a young man who suddenly has had the problems of this team thrown on him while he is still trying to figure out Citi field. I think that he will work it out by all star break and have one of his usual stretch run streaks that will feature his power. I have faith that it will all come back to him. At least he is putting the ball in play, maybe not over the fence but I hope that tonight's game will get his power rolling esp with CBP coming up this weekend. LGM!

Like I said in the first real sentence, he is by no means having a bad year - in fact he is doing quite well in some respects. None of this however, explains why he is so passive at the plate and has taken so many called strikeouts. It's one thing if he is swinging and missing, but nothing is more frustrating than when he goes down without at least trying to hit the ball. When he is the only really good hitter in the lineup, he shouldn't be trying to grind out walks, he should be trying to drive in runs. Nothing is wrong with a walk, but there is something wrong when drawing a walk appears to be his main goal.

Your post is way too logical and will therefore be ignored by Mr. Manuel and, I am sorry to say the rest of the Mets' organization.
But have you considered an ulterior motive in the method of Manuel madness, hmmmm?
Perhaps he is cleverly positioning his team for the first draft choice! How are those prospects looking for 2010?

Hey, crazy idea, let's cut our best player some slack while surrounded by a lineup in which Ryan Church is a legitimate cleanup hitter. It's not like he's been bad...Just chill. The power will come. It's not some weird approach or anything. Tell me, if Wright had 10 HRs right now but was leading the league in hitting, would you be worried? No. And that's funny, because Wright has lost 6 HRs to Citi Field's dimensions already.

Sure, Lets kill the best player on the team. You know hitting a baseball isn't that easy right?

Wright goes from knowing he's the only one that will get it done, to knowing that one guy can't get it done and he should be selective. He's in an impossible situation. He could be selective and take the billion walks he'd get and hope the guys behind him suddenly start hitting, or Manuel finally stops putting Tatis there. Or he could try to get a hit. Part of the power outage is the general approach the Mets have preached this year. Going the other way, battling in atbats. Other parts of it is just that they never throw him pitches to hit out. Especially lately. They do what they can to get him out on the corners and whatnot, and if they walk him, so be it, but if they get the calls, hit the spots, gravy.

This is one of the reasons Babe Ruth is still probably the best to ever play the game. he routinely homered on pitches outside the strikezone. he could go days without seeing a strike. And he hit it so hard that even his pop-ups went so high and came down so hard they were frequently dropped.

They do what they can to get him out on the corners and whatnot, and if they walk him, so be it, but if they get the calls, hit the spots, gravy.

this is such an obvious choice that I'm surprised that I haven't heard it before. i wonder if the Mets are smart enough to think of it on their own.
