WFAN Interview with the Jacket

Head on over the wfan's website and check a good informative interview with the Jacket.

It covers all things of Rick Peterson's domain.  Pedro's throwing off the mound, the Show, Ollie Perez and his arm angle, Heilman and Billy's relationship, and most importantly: his jacket.

“Its a pocket thing…if there's a windchill and its still over 90 I'll take off the jacket”

Well the burning question is answered. Oh, and I guess some people were curious about the 'heated exchange' between Randolph and Jacket the other night, so if you wondering about that, its in there too. Turns out it was just a El Duque impression contest. If I had a dollar for everytime I got caught in one of those.

  • Bloggers Mock Draft

This week I will be representing Hot Foot in Awful Announcing's NFL mock draft. Many other blogs such as Deadspin, The Big Lead, Sports Show on Mute and Ladies….. will be participating as well. The Big Lead and I will be drafting for the Atlanta Falcons. Being one of the three Falcons fans in the Tri-State area (Sal LaCotta of WFAN and former WFAN caller Erik from the Bronx being the other two), we hope to make other Falcon fans proud. I'll report back at the end of the draft with the results.

  • New WFAN Schedule

As you all know by now, Mike and the Mod Dog will be taking over for Imus In The Morning on WFAN for the next two weeks. After the next two weeks, there could be more changes to the WFAN schedule then you can shake a stick at. Below, I tell you where each show should go and who should be on them.

    5:30 AM - 10:00 AM
    Mike Francessa and Chris Russo
Gotta put the big boys in the prime slot. The only reason this didn't happen already was because Imus was in the way.

    10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

    Chris Carlin and Jerry Recco
I would prefer to have either Adam Schein
or Sid Rosenberg work alongside the Continent in this slot, but I don't see them coming back. Carlin is a lock for this gig. He has been due for a big break ever since he left producing for Mike & The Dog. As for Recco, he hosted a few overnights this summer when Tony Paige was off and did a very good job. He is very knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor.

    1:00 PM - 6:30 PM
    Evan Roberts and Joe Beningo
    Evan
is one of the rising stars in sports talk radio and its been a ton of
fun listening to him since he has been on the station and seeing him
rise from host at MAXIM to a big gig at the biggest sports station in
the land. I can't say enough good things about him and he should be a
staple for years to come. As for Joe, I love Joe. Sure, he gets carried
away sometimes, but its only because he is one of the most passionate
    fans in the country.

    6:30 PM - 10:00 PM
    Steve Sommers
Keep the Smooz where he is. He is good there. He has a loyal following and and his monologues are great following games regardless of the outcome.

    10:00 PM - 1:00 AM/Alternate Overnight Guy
    Sal LaCotta
    I
listened to a little bit of his show on New Years (or was it Christmas)
when I went to the bathroom and I was impressed. He also has a good
taste in teams being a Mets and Falcons fan.

    1:00 AM - 5:30 AM
    Marc Malusis
    I'm not
that big of a fan of Malusis, but if it gets Tony Paige, who might be
the worst host on all of radio, off the air, I'm all for it. I'd rather
listen to the Latin Beat then listen to Tony again. Always agreeing
with every caller, constantly contradicting himself, saying everything
Isiah does that's questionable is genius while he insults some of the
same actions under Larry Brown and him lack of knowledge about anything
besides boxing can drive you up a wall. I mean, if you host a show on a
SPORTS radio station, you should at least know who won the world series
5 years ago. Anyway, Malusis tends to think he is much more knowledgeable than the callers while he doesn't know too much himself.

So there you have it. Comment away.

  • Mike and The Mad Dog At Mets Camp

WFAN yesterday had Mike and The Mad Dog on location at the Mets game against the Cardinals. Toasted Joe was able to capture some of their priceless comments.

If you were watching the game on SNY yesterday,  you caught Gary Cohen comment “They will let anyone into the building here” when the camera panned into a both showing an animated Russo talking to Francesa.

    Nicely played Gary.

If you missed their interview with Lastings Milledge, make sure you go check it out. Milledge was fantastic. He comes off very well. Confident, comfortable, and definitely wins over Mike and Chris with his personality. He's definitely not the type to give the stock interview and he speaks from the heart. Well done, Lastings.

    Deep Thoughts With Mike Francesa

Phil Mushnick takes on Mike Francesa over his assessment, while broadcasting from Miami for the Super Bowl, that “Jackie Gleason put Miami Beach on the map”, in today's New York Post.

Monday, in Florida for Supe 41, Francesa gifted Chris Russo and
other WFAN listeners a U.S. history lesson. Miami Beach, Francesa
explained, wasn't much until Jackie Gleason, in the 1960s, made it the
home of his popular TV show.

“Jackie Gleason,” puffed Francesa, “put Miami Beach on the map.”

Russo, in the role of Grasshopper, seated at the wise man's feet,
seemed both fascinated and believing of this “fact.” Perhaps some
    listeners were equally enlightened.

    And then, to emphasize
both this “fact” and his wisdom - as if it might be on the final exam -
Prof. Francesa repeated it: “Jackie Gleason put Miami Beach on the
    map.”

Gee, thanks, Professor Mike, except for one thing: You're full of it. Again.

Mushnick goes on to explain how Miami Beach was known for many important things well before Gleason's arrival.

Hat tip to Can't Stop The Bleeding for the link.

I love it, but honestly, calling Mike Francesa a blowhard is like calling water wet or the sky blue. We've been well aware of this for many years now, but its always fun to hear the latest brain fart that comes out of his mouth.

  • WFAN's Kevin Burkhardt to Replace Chris Cotter

Earlier today on the Mike & the Mad Dog Show, WFAN reported that Chris Cotter who was the Mets pre-game and post-game reporter for the Mets during the 2006 season, has been replaced by Kevin Burkhardt who frequently does the 20/20 updates on WFAN. There is no word on whether or not Cotter will re-sign with SNY with a different role for 2007 or if he was fired.

Thats too bad. I was a big fan of Cotter's when he did the pre/post game interviews which he did a great job on and then he would occasionally have some fun during the game, when visiting different places in all the ball parks the Mets visited. I think Burkhardt should be able to take over Cotter's role without a problem because he does a a pretty nice job whenever he's on the FAN.

Appearing on WFAN, Swenny Murti reports that the Red Sox may have gone a 5th year in their attempt to sign free agent Julio Lugo.

Wow, 5 years for Julio Lugo. Pretty crazy if you ask me.

  • Willie Randolph On WFAN

Willie Randolph spoke with Mike Francesa and Chris Russo on WFAN this afternoon. Here's some of what Willie had to say.

    On the team's success…

“Mets fans should be feeling good about this team. We've been consistant all year. We're looking for some packback tonight from the Phillies. We want to just keep playing the game and stay sharp.”

    On Glavine

“Glavine is gonna do long toss today, side bullpen tomorrow. Tommy will determine, middle of next week most likely. He will be fine.”

    On Pedro

“Pedro's boot is off, he's throwing more. No timetable.”

    On Cliff

“He is probrobly gonna play Monday (down in the minors), he's taking swings and throws. Maybe get him back middle of next week, if not, early September…”

“I'm gonna get him going if I can. I'm gonna give him an opportunity to play but he's gonna have to hold his own. When he comes back hopefully he's in good shape.”

    On Oliver Perez

“His last start was very positive. He threw the ball well. The stuff is there, he just needs to harness his energy and throw strikes. He is high strung. He is very very excited and quick in his actions on the mound.”

    On El Duque

“I'm not concerned, i'm watching his innings. He's tempramental when it comes to overuse. You gotta keep him strong. We're taking a look at Bannister and Oliver to give him a couple of days off. His arm is a little tired right now, nothing is wrong physically.”

    On Delgado's sudden surge….

“He's too good of a hitter, he just needed to make some side adjustements.”

    Bob Raissman on Kaye's Meltdown

In today's New York Daily News, Bob Raissman's comments on Michael Kay losing it on 1050 ESPN radio, when someone told him it was poor baseball etiquette to mention a no hitter or perfect game was in progress. In case you missed it, Deadspin has the audio.

He also makes some funny comments regarding Chris “Mad Dog” Russo on WFAN going off about how Jose Reyes got a raw deal on his contract, suggesting Chris and his partner Mike Francesa compare their own WFAN contracts on the air.

    Ed Coleman Report On WFAN

Eddie Coleman spoke to Chris Russo with his Mets report on WFAN

Coleman started off announcing that Duaner Sanchez was undergoing surgery as we speak, ending his season.

Coleman heard that Duaner and his cousin went to get something to eat at 1AM, in hindsight he wished he would have taken room service instead.

Exiting 62nd street, the accident occurred. He was not wearing his seatbelt, put his arm up to brace himself from the partition.

The injury is a severe seperation with torn ligaments.

Nady was upset about leaving, essentially a  south florida cab driver sends him from a playoff bound team to the celler dwelling Pirates. The Mets should be better defensively in right field.

Roberto Hernandez said he's fully rested in a good place right now, they scaled back on him in the last few weeks in Pittsburg.

Milledge will get the games Nady ordinarily played. He will also fill in for Floyd as well. Coleman thinks they can get by and match the Nady numbers. Sanchez was a guy that surprised the Mets, and he pitched very well for them.

Giants said today, the Mets didnt put Milledge in a package for Jason Schmidt.

Discussing Glavine, he was not happy with being taken out early. Coleman said he thinks he lacks confidence right now. He needs to command things a bit better.

Coleman said he could see a situation when Pelfrey pitches tonight and goes back to the minors, so they can get Maine another start. Unless Pelfrey wows the Mets, he see them going with the veteran arms in the playoffs, Pedro, Glavine, Trachsel and El Duque.

Pitch count was down for Pedro last outing, which was a good sign. He's going to back out there on Thursday. He sees plenty of opportunites to scale back his starts to give him more rest in September.

    Who Is Hot Foot?

Hot Foot was founded by a group of life long friends who also happen to be die hard Mets fans. Hot Foot comes from the great 1986 Mets relief pitcher Roger McDowell who would use a wad of gum to stick a roll of cigarettes to the back of unsuspecting teammates shoes and light them on fire, thus a Hot Foot. Hot Foot is inspired by the same rock and roll baseball mentality of Roger and the 86 Mets, and uncensored commentary with news, notes, rumors and analysis revolving around the world of the Amazin New York Mets.
