Ex Mets: Diaz Released

Victor Diaz has been released by the Rangers. He appeared in just 37 games for the Rangers last season, going .240 with 9 HRs and 25 RBIs. Acquired by the Mets in 03, Diaz spent the most time with the Mets in 2005 when he played in 89 games, getting 72 hits in 280 at bats. He was traded to the Rangers for minor leaguer Mike Nickeas, a catcher who spent most of last season with the B-Mets.

Down on the Farm

Aside from the injuries to Lastings and Johnson, some might be wondering what else is going on down in the farm system.  So lets take a quick look.

Ricky Leedee, who was kind of briefly a Met last season, had a grand slam earlier in the week as part of a 4 for 5 day that helped the Zephyrs beat the Isotopes (Marlins AAA) 17 to 8.  Leedee followed this up by striking out five times Thursday and twice on Friday.  He's now batting .314, the slam was his sole homerun so far. Just remember, one bad diving catch by Alou, and he'll be in blue and orange.

Victor Diaz had four RBI's, which would be much cooler if he was still with the Met organization.  Now a Redhawk, he helped the Rangers AAA team defeat the Zephyrs 5-1. Mike DiFelice had the sole Zephyr RBI in the game, which took place yesterday.  It was his 8th RBI of the season,  he's now batting .360

Carlos Gomez went 0 for 4, this ended a 21 game streak in which he reached safely.  He's stolen 10 bases so far, getting caught 3 times.  The speedy Gomez has an OBP of .366, including 9 walks.

Robinson Cancel has been moved from the B-Mets to the Zephyrs to replace Lastings on the roster.  I…don't know anything about him.  Anyone?

Ruben Gotay has hit in seven straight, including a 4 for 7 day in Tuesdays romp. He's currently looking like the most likely option should we need second basemen (ie, Stache or Easley gets hurt).  Anderson Hernendez is..well, playing like Anderson Hernendez.

Up on the mound Chan Ho Park continues to survive thanks to the Zephyrs offense.  After Tuesdays win, he's 3-1 with a 7.29 ERA after 21 IP.  He's given up six homeruns and 17 runs total. I think the chances of us seeing Park promoted get smaller and smaller as the season goes on. We'll see Dave Williams first.  Jorge Sosa is the current cream of the crop.  3-0 with a 1.38 ERA.  He's given up just 4 earned runs, while striking out 24.
should Pelf continue to struggle, I'm guessing Sosa will get the first shot at the 5 spot.

Victor Diaz Traded For Minor League Catcher

Mets Blog reports that the Mets have traded OF Victor Diaz to Texas for C Mike Nickeas.

In 113 at-bats in Double-A this season, Nickeas, 23, hit .248 with
seven doubles, two HR, 15 RBI and 22 strikeouts.  In 2005, Baseball
America named Nickeas the best defensive catcher in the Rangers minor
league system…

Diaz, 24, hit .224 with eight HR, 38 RBI and 99
strikeouts in 379 at-bats for Triple-A Norfolk this season.  He was
designated for assignment on August 22 to make room for OF Shawn Green.

It would seem that the previous rumors with the Mets looking to acquire the Diamondback's catcher, Danny Ardoin would be less likely with this move.

Farm Report : MacLane Carries 1-Hitter Into 8th

Here's a rundown of this weekends minor league action courtesy of the fantastic Toby's Mets Minor League Report

Saturday

Evan MacLane had his best outing in a
month firing off seven and a third solid innings with six strikeouts.  He allowed just one run on three hits and
three walks. He carried a one hitter into the

drove home three in a 2-4 night in support of MacLane.  The only other Tide with two hit was Tagg Bozied who was 2-3 with a solo HR
and two runs scored.

Catcher Yunir Garcia started his first game for
Norfolk, after
one pinch hitting appearance, and was 1-3.

Sunday

Sandy Martinez slugged
a walk-off homer in the ninth inning to lead the Tides to a win at Harbor Park, he
also
drove in a run with a fourth-inning double.

Heath Bell
(3-2) picked up the win in relief of Jose
Lima
who was pitching a shutout until surrendering four runs in the sixth
inning.

Victor Diaz and Bobby Malek both had two hits and an
RBI.

Binghamton Mets (AA)

Saturday

Michael Devaney turned in a solid start allowing two runs, one
earned in five innings.  He gave up six
hits and walked four.

inning.

loss.

Jorge Padilla doubled twice in a 2-4
performance with two runs scored.

Chase Lambin launched a solo HR as
well.

Sunday

Miguel Perez (6-5) allowed eight hits and six runs in five
innings of work.

St Lucie Mets (A+)

Saturday

three run HR in the bottom of the ninth for St. Lucie. Stewart

Carp, in addition to starting the ninth inning rally doubled and drove
home a run.

Sal Aguilar turned in a nice start,
allowing two runs in seven innings.  He struck
out two and walked two.

Carlos Muniz blew the save in the ninth
by giving up a run, but Stewart’s blast made him a winner.

Sunday

Jose Coronado’s
three-run, eighth-inning single proved to be the margin, as St. Lucie battled
back from a big deficit and shaky starting pitching to beat Vero Beach at historic Holman Stadium.  (Ed: If you had trouble with the concept of a
three-run single, you weren’t alone.
Coronado himself scored the third run on the play on a throwing error on
Vero’s catcher.  This, my friends, is
minor league baseball.)

Carlos Muniz
pitched the final out of the game to pick up his 27th save of the season.

Hagerstown Suns (A-)

Saturday

Deolis Guerra (5-7) allowed just one run in his five innings on two hits.  He walked three and struck out three,
lowering his ERA to 2.35.

Centerfielder
Sean Henry, who was converted from
SS this year, and promoted this week from Kingsport,
was 2-3 with two doubles.

Sunday

Jeramy Simmons (1-2) was sharp through seven innings, allowing
just two runs and four hits, but ran out of gas in the eighth, allowing a pair
of singles and then a double, which scored a run, to start off the inning.

Ryan Meyers couldn’t put out the fire,
giving up a single and two more runs before finally quelling the uprising.

Kevin Tomasiewicz slammed the door and
picked up his 15th save.

Heres a rundown of yesterdays minor league action courtesy of Toby's fantastic Minor League Report

AAA

Tagg Bozied’s pinch hit, two-out,

Anderson
Hernandez
had two hits in a 2-4 day.

Victor Diaz was 1-3 with a walk
that started the Tides rally in the bottom of the ninth.

says the Virginian-Pilot.

Perez

Matt Lindstrom blew away three in his
two innings in a non-save situation.

Corey Ragsdale

his eighth HR in the second inning.

innings for his 11th win of the year, lowering his ERA to 3.34. Niese has now won his last three starts in a row, striking out at least
six in each outing.

Fernando Martinez
was 2-4 from the top
of the Suns order.

Leivi Ventura
was 2-2 with a walk, RBI and run scored.

Farm Report

In Adam Rubin's Daily News “Blog”, he gives a lengthy rundown on Lastings Millidge

Milledge had the least experience in right, which can be tricky at
windy, on-the-water Harbor Park, the Tides’ home. He slammed into the
wall hard going after one foul ball, but came away unfazed.

GM Omar Minaya has said he wouldn’t hesitate promoting
Milledge if needed, though that’s not expected soon, especially with
Beltran’s MRI coming up clean after being reviewed in New York
yesterday. Had Beltran needed to go on the DL, Willie Randolph said it was more likely the Mets would have recalled Victor Diaz and used Endy Chavez
in center. Still, Milledge could be up before September, though an
injury likely would be required, since he’s not going to sit on the
bench.

Center field has become perhaps the deepest position for the Mets’
organization, with the top three prospects all leadoff hitters, too.
Double-A’s Carlos Gomez, also 20, is a rawer version of Milledge, but thought of just as highly. And 17-year-old Fernando Martinez,
signed for $1.4 million last summer, is hitting .333 at low-A
Hagerstown despite being the youngest player in any organization on a
full-season minor-league team.

Rubin gives updates on some other notable folks in the Mets minor league system including Mike Pelfrey, Henry Owens, Chris Shelton, Willie Callazo, Evan Maclane..

Heres a list of the organizations leaders…

Average: Lastings Milledge, Norfolk, .396; Brett Harper, Binghamton,
.382; Jorge Padilla, Binghamton, .367; Corey Coles, St. Lucie, .340;
Fernando Martinez, Hagerstown, .333.

HR: Nick Evans, Hagerstown, 3; Jorge Padilla, Binghamton, 3.

RBI: Bobby Malek, Binghamton, 11; Nick Evans, Hagerstown, 10; Jorge Padilla, Binghamton, 10.

Steals: Carlos Gomez, Binghamton, 9; Ambiorix Concepcion, St. Lucie, 7; Lastings Milledge, Norfolk, 4.

Wins: Willie Collazo, Binghamton, 2; Evan MacLane, Binghamton, 2;
Jonathan Niese, Hagerstown, 2; Marcelo Perez, Hagerstown, 2; Kevin
Tomasiewicz, Hagerstown, 2.

ERA: Carlos Muniz, St. Lucie, 0.00; Alay Soler, St. Lucie, 0.60;
Orlando Roman, Binghamton, 0.93; Eddie Camacho, Binghamton, 0.96.

Strikeouts: Henry Owens, Binghamton, 21; Mike Pelfrey, St. Lucie, 18; Alay Soler, St. Lucie, 17.

Saves: Carlos Muniz, St. Lucie, 4; Henry Owens, Binghamton, 4; Heath Bell, Norfolk, 3.

Who Is Hot Foot?

Hot Foot was founded by a group of life long friends who also happen to be die hard Mets fans. Hot Foot comes from the great 1986 Mets relief pitcher Roger McDowell who would use a wad of gum to stick a roll of cigarettes to the back of unsuspecting teammates shoes and light them on fire, thus a Hot Foot. Hot Foot is inspired by the same rock and roll baseball mentality of Roger and the 86 Mets, and uncensored commentary with news, notes, rumors and analysis revolving around the world of the Amazin New York Mets.
