They’re All Gonna Laugh At You

The guys over at Big League Stew are getting a big kick out of both big market NY teams having problems with their respective first basemen. The are conducting a “Who’s the worst first baseman in NY poll” and having a grand ol’ time mocking the situation…

Currently, the best point-and-laugh situation is the Big Apple, where both first basemen are redefining the term anchor. Despite the fact that they’re both in contract years, Jason Giambi and Carlos Delgado are both headed for a non-guaranteed contract with some has-been team come next spring. If they’re lucky.

C’mon Mets fans show me something. Go vote. I know a lot of Mets fans can’t stand Delgado right now but we can’t let him lose to a Juicer like Giambi.

  • Mets Fan Arrested

An unidentified Mets fan was arrested at CBP today, after a bit of fisticuffs erupted in the stands. While our hard working research team here at The Foot have no details, it is assumed that the Met fan was most likely intelligently stating a reasonable thought towards why the Mets were a superior team, when an overzealous Phillies fan ruthlessly assaulted him. The police, clearly Phillies fans, most likely then unjustly arrested the victim. The incident occurred in the 9th.

  • The Happy Recap: Mets 4 Phils 2

The Mets won the series today, beating the Phillies by 4-2. Ollie Perez (2-0) will take the win, going 5.2 innings walking four, striking out seven and giving up four hits. Old Man Moyer takes the loss. That is not to say it was a one man show. The Mets used six pitchers in relief and did pretty well considering Citizens Bank Park being so small. Show gave up a home run to Chase Utley and Carlos Ruiz drove in one off Heilman. The Mets scored their runs off a 2 run homer from Jose Reyes and a 2 RBI double by David Wright.

Tomorrow, the Mets go for a sweep in this series, five straight wins against the Phils and sixth overall. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball at 8:05pm. The Mets will send RHP Mike Pelfrey (2-0) to the mound to face off against RHP Adam Eaton from the Phillies.

  • Mr. Met Thanks You For Not Smoking

mr met smokeDamian Ghihliotty and Matt Townsend of the New York Observer witnessed and documented the first season the Mets have seriously enforced their no smoking policy in Shea Stadium.

The Mets are enforcing the rule that was mostly ignored because the new CitiField will be completely smoke free.

Fine with me, but as a former smoker I can understand the frustration. Think of it this way, Mr. Met is getting you back the 4 years of your life that game yesterday took out of us all.

  • Postgame: Mets 3 Brewers 5

In his first home start, Johan Santana will take the loss as the Mets fall to the Brewers in game 2 of the three game series. Santana gave up 3 home runs while striking out 5 in 6.2 innings of work. The Mets bullpen, by the grace of the baseball gods, did not give up any more runs and only allowed one hit through the next 2.1 innings of work. Brewers pitcher Ben Sheets will take the win, going 7.2 innings with only 5 hits and 3 runs.

On the bright side, one of those runs came from a 2 out solo shot off the bat of David Wright, leaving him only one home run away from reaching the milestone 100.

Tomorrow the Mets will face the Brewers in the rubber game of the series. LHP Oliver Perez will take the mound against RHP Jeff Suppan. The game is scheduled for a 1:10pm start.

  • New Yankee Stadium Is Cursed

The ps front page story today is how a construction worker who happens to be a Red Sox fan buried a Boston Red Sox t-shirt into the visitor’s locker room while working on the new Yankee Stadium.

”In August, a Red Sox T-shirt was poured in a slab in the visitor’s clubhouse. It’s the curse of the Yankees,” one worker said. “Nobody knows about it. It’s in the floors, it’s buried.”

I love it. Watch them tear down the visitors clubhouse now and rebuild it. I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually went to those lengths to remove it.

  • Postgame: Mets 4 Phillies 3

The Mets defeated the Phillies tonight by a score of 4-3. Angel Pagan drove in Jose Reyes with a walk-off single in the 12th. For a full box score, go to MLB.com.

A nice bounce-back start from John Maine tonight. Maine gave up 1 run on 5 hits through 6+ IP while walking 5. He got into trouble in the 7th surrendering a HR to Pedro Feliz and then a double. Pedro Feliciano came in and walked the next batter before striking out the following 3. Aaron Heilman’s rough April continues as he blew the lead, giving up 2 runs in his inning of work. Show came in to bail out Joe Smith in a tough spot and got Chase Utley to ground into an inning ending double play. Jorge Sosa threw one pitch for one out and earns the Win.

Reyes was 2-for-6 and scored the winning run along with getting his first SB of the season. Ryan Church was 2-for-5 with 2 rbi. Pagan was 3-for-5 and is hitting .370 to start the season.

The Brewers come to town to begin a 3 game series tomorrow. Nelson Figueroa will make his first start of the year.

Took the series.   Lets put this behind and continue to roll vs the Brew-crew.

  • Postgame: Mets 8 Phillies 2

The Mets defeated the Phillies tonight by a score of 8-2. For a full box score, head over to MLB.com.

Hello Mike Pelfrey, good to see you. Like I said in pregame, Pelfrey did a good job of keeping the ball down in the strike zone and getting good movement off his fastball. He came up pretty big tonight and held the Phils to 2 runs on 5 hits through 5 innings. Sosa came on to pitch 2 perfect innings. Feliciano and Muniz followed with scoreless innings each.

Other than Pelfrey, the big story of the game was the sloppy defense by the Phillies. They made 4 errors on the night including 2 by SS Eric Bruntlett who was in to replace injured Jimmy Rollins. The Phillies poor defense made up for the face that the Mets did not hit well tonight. They loaded the bases in the first 2 innings and only managed one run before exploding for 6 in the 3rd. Not a big day statistically speaking. Pagan was 1-for-3 with 2 rbi. The Mets left 21 runners on base and were fortunate to come away with a win today. Lets hope they can turn the corner and keep the wins coming.

The finale of this 3 game series is tomorrow night. John Maine will go versus Adam Eaton.

We’ll take a win any way we can get it. I think Ron touched on the face that maybe now that Pelfrey isn’t fighting for that 5th spot that he can relax a little and focus more on pitching effectively like he did tonight. Lets take the series tomorrow.

  • Post Game: Mets 5 Braves 11

The Mets…well they lost. By what could be described as a lot. Though in the grand scheme of things, giving the size of the universe and length of eternal time, six runs isn’t that much. Right?

John Maine took the loss, giving up four runs in four innings while throwing 96 pitches.  There were claims of overthrowing, which is a fancy way of saying Maine had a bad game. He added three walks to his tally for the day. Joe Smith made his second appearance of the season, lasting one and a third and giving up a run. Sosa gave up a grand slam to the pinchitting Kelly Johnson and after that, well seriously, after a late game pinch hit grand slam who cares.  Figueroa did stuff afterwards, Show did stuff before. Pinch hit grand slam.

On the Mets offense side, cause they did score almost half as many runs as the Braves, Beltran and Delgado had back to back doubles in an unsuccessful rally.  Pagan added two RBIs, bringing him to six for the season. Ryan Church went two for four and added an outfield assist.

Smoltz takes on Santana tommorrow, as the Mets look to even out the series and not lose. Hopefully conditions will be drier, the Mets pitching better, and the Braves hitting worse.

  • Postgame: Mets 4 Marlins 5

The Mets lost to the Marlins tonight by a score of 5-4 in 10 innings. For a full box score, go here.

Tonight’s big story was Pedro Martinez, who had to leave the game in the 4th inning with a hamstring injury. Before that, he surrendered 4 runs on 4 hits with a walk and a strikeout. Matt Wise gets the loss after surrendering a walk-off HR to Robert Andino after striking out the first 2 batters in the 10th.

Brian Schneider was 3-for-4 tonight with an rbi. Angel Pagan continues to be hot, going 1-for-3 with 2 rbi.

The rubber match of this series will be tomorrow night as Oliver Perez will start versus Andrew Miller.

Not exactly the start we were looking for out of Pedro. His health was an obvious concern for us this season, but to happen right out of the gate is very concerning. We’ll know more after he gets back to New York and has an MRI.

    Who Is Hot Foot?

Hot Foot was founded by a group of life long friends who also happen to be die hard Mets fans. Hot Foot comes from the great 1986 Mets relief pitcher Roger McDowell who would use a wad of gum to stick a roll of cigarettes to the back of unsuspecting teammates shoes and light them on fire, thus a Hot Foot. Hot Foot is inspired by the same rock and roll baseball mentality of Roger and the 86 Mets, and uncensored commentary with news, notes, rumors and analysis revolving around the world of the Amazin New York Mets.
