Today, in the Grapefruit League finale, the Mets take on the Baltimore Orioles. Here is your starting lineup, with Angel Pagan being replaced today by Fernando Tatis, perhaps in an effort to give coaches another look at him as roster decisions will soon need to be made.

Adam Rubin on his Daily News blog provides the lineup and reports that Steven Register is headed back to the Rockies.
Join us in the Hot Foot Bleachers to weigh in on the fifth starter and come up with nasty rumors to prevent other teams from wanting to pick up Ruben Gotay on waivers.
I thought Register pitched well this spring and with the uncertainty of Sanchez should have been given a chance. Its seems like the Mets have more faith in Joe Smith, who will likely take his place on the roster.
Matt Cerrone on Mets Blog reports by way of Adam Rubin on his blog for the New York Daily News that Steve Register has cleared waivers.
Register will now be offered back to the Colorado Rockies for $25,000.
According to the Daily News, Steven Register has been placed on waivers. Any of the other MLB teams may now claim him off waivers, otherwise the Mets offer him back to the Rockies, or trade the Rockies for him. This last option would allow the team to place him in the minor league system.
This move shows that either the team is sure Duaner Sanchez is ready, or is willing to give that temporary bullpen spot to Joe Smith (likely) or one of the other AAA relief arms. The most likely scenerio is that Register will be picked up by another team. Though who knows, since just yesterday it seemed like Register was going to make the opening day roster. Its a crazy mixed up world. Oh the humanity!
There are also rumors about that Ruben Gotay has been placed on waivers, though I have no confirmation at this time.
Gotay might actually still be with the Mets. He’s hurt. He can’t field. He can hit, if he were healthy I’d say he’d never clear waivers. Though if he were healthy, he probably wouldn’t have been placed on them. This move is a bit of a surprise, especially since the team could at the very least DL him and buy time to make that sort of decision till he’s healthy.
Mets Blog reports that the Brewers have released RHP Claudio Vargas, according to Tom Haudricourt at his blog for the Journal Sentinel.
Vargas, 29, was 11-6 with a 5.09 ERA in 29 games for the Brewers last season, during which he started 23 games.
Adam Rubin sits down briefly with Steven Register, who will likely grab the final bullpen spot, at least till Duaner Sanchez is healthy enough to pitch back to back games. Register is a Rule 5 pick, which means if he does not remain on the active roster, he will be returned to the Rockies, possible via UPS. Register on what thats like:
All the guys have been really good. But, I mean, it is a weird situation. You’re with the team now, so you’re trying to fit in and everything. But then, one snap or one second later, I could be with a different team. So it’s been good, but it’s definitely been a weird situation.

Over the next week, I’ll be breaking down the things that have to go right for the Mets this year if they want to make the playoffs.
Note: All of this is done assuming we do not make any significant acquisitions of any sort, be it through trade or a free agent signing.
First and foremost, if the ‘08 Mets want to succeed, their bullpen will need to be strong.
Even though I think both of them have their mental lapses, I am fairly confident Billy Wagner and Aaron Heilman will hold their own as a strong closer and a strong set-up man respectively.
However, you need more than two people to have a good bullpen. If I had to take a guess, the Mets will carry 12 pitchers. Subtract four starters that will start the season on the roster (no reason to start the season with 5 starters), Wagner and Heilman, you have six slots left. As of now, I give those spots to Pedro Feliciano, Scott Schoenweis, Duaner Sanchez, Jorge Sosa, Matt Wise and Juan Padilla. However, Steven Register could easily take Juan Padilla’s spot, as could a long reliever.
Assuming that is the general gist of our bullpen, these are the things that need to happen for our bullpen to be strong:
With a rotation that will most likely look like: Pedro Martinez, Oliver Perez, John Maine, Orlando Hernandez and Mike Pelfrey, a strong bullpen will be neccesary. Pelfrey, Maine and Perez will all be erratic, while Pedro and El Duque are both aging and struggle to go deep into games. Duaner has shown he can be great, Schoenweis deserves another chance, Jorge Sosa has shown he can be solid and we might still need some help from the back of the ‘pen. All in all, if our bullpen can pump out a solid season, our weak starting pitching will seem to be a much smaller issue than it actually is.
