Beltran Leads MLB In Win Shares

Carlos Beltran leads all of baseball in Win Shares, tied with Albert Pujlos, with 27.

Win Shares is a very complicated statistic that takes all the
contributions a player makes toward his team’s wins and distills them
into a single number that represents the number of wins contributed to
the team, times three.

Sabermetric Godfather, and Boston Red Sox consultant, Bill James, is the inventor of the “Win Share”

Elias On Maine

Elias Sports Bureau brings us these John Maine facts…

John Maine
has not allowed a run in each of his last three starts. He's the first
rookie pitcher to do that — while throwing at least six innings in
each outing — since the Brewers' Cal Eldred
in August 1992.

The last National League rookie with three straight
scoreless starts of at least six innings was Orel Hershiser, who threw
three straight complete-game shutouts for the Dodgers in July 1984.
(Hershiser had one relief appearance — on the Sunday before the
All-Star break — during that streak.)

Maine's first scoreless inning of his streak came in relief.

Slammin! Mets and Beltran Tie Grand Slam Records

Carlos Beltran smashed his third grand slam of the month today against the Atlanta Braves.

His second-inning slam was his 31st homer and New York's
record-tying sixth slam this month. The drive gave the Mets a 7-0
lead and broke the club record for most homers by a center fielder
in a season. Beltran came up in the third with the bases loaded
again and struck out.

Beltran became the ninth player in major league history to hit
three grand slams in a calendar month, according to the Elias
Sports Bureau. Devon White was the last major leaguer to accomplish
the feat, doing it for Milwaukee in May 2001.

The Mets' six slams this month matches the major league record
set by the Montreal Expos in April 1996 and matched by Cleveland in
May 1999.

Mike Cameron's 30 homers in 2004 was the Mets' previous
single-season record for a center fielder.

Beltran hit 2 home runs today as well as in yesterdays game, the last time a Met had back to back 2 home run games was 21 years ago, in 1985, by Gary Carter.

Elias Says

…The Mets' 10-inning, 1-0 victory over the Cubs was the fourth game in
the majors this season that was scoreless through nine innings, but it
was the Mets' second extra-inning shutout win. The other was against
Arizona, also at Shea Stadium, on May 31. The only other season in
which the Mets had more than one extra-inning shutout victory at home
was 1969, when they won three games at Shea that were 0-0 at the end of
regulation…

Jose Valentin has as come a long way in games that go a long way. From the time that
Valentin came into the majors in 1992, he had just one hit in his first
33 at-bats in extra innings — a span that took him into the 1998
season. He then went through an 8-for-41 stretch in extra innings,
still a sub-Mendoza Line performance, taking him into the 2004 season.

But Valentin's game-winning hit off Glendon Rusch on Wednesday was his seventh hit in his last 14 extra-inning at-bats, including a 4-for-7 mark this season…

  • Delgado Goes From Cold To Scorching Hot

Carlos Delgado seems to have flicked a switch and gone from brutally cold, snapping a month long slump and now has 10 RBIs in his last five games.

Delgado began July with a 2-for-24 slump. He hit three homers in the Mets' last five games. He
was 4-for-6 with four walks, four runs and seven RBIs against Houston
    over the weekend.

After going 12 games and 42 at-bats without a homer,
    Delgado (.254, 25 HRs, 65 RBIs) hit a solo blast off Cincinnati's
Bronson Arroyo last Thursday and two more against the Astros.

    Who Is Hot Foot?

Hot Foot was founded by a group of life long friends who also happen to be die hard Mets fans. Hot Foot comes from the great 1986 Mets relief pitcher Roger McDowell who would use a wad of gum to stick a roll of cigarettes to the back of unsuspecting teammates shoes and light them on fire, thus a Hot Foot. Hot Foot is inspired by the same rock and roll baseball mentality of Roger and the 86 Mets, and uncensored commentary with news, notes, rumors and analysis revolving around the world of the Amazin New York Mets.
