According to TCPalm the three 'internal' finalists for the 2007 Mets third base job are Gary Carter, Ken Oberkfell, and Howard Johnson.
New York Mets manager Willie Randolph and general manager Omar Minaya could make the decision before the annual winter meetings, which begin Monday in Orlando.
“If (Johnson) gets it, hey, great,” Carter said. “He's as deserving as I feel I am.”
HoJo said “If I don't get it, I certainly hope Gary gets it. And I feel like, if I don't get it and Gary doesn't get it, I hope Ken gets it.”
Carter said he might consider coming back as the St. Lucie manager, but he could be promoted to the Triple-A manager if Oberkfell is named the major-league team's third-base coach.
I wish the Mets would consider Rickey Henderson for the third base job. I think it would be great bringing back. Not only do I feel he would do well as a third base coach, but also he could help out Jose Reyes and the other young players on the team whether its stealing bsaes or working on their hitting. If Rickey doesnt get the job though, id be fine bringing up the Kid, Obie, or HoJo, with Gary Carter being my preference.
Sphere: Related ContentThe Mets are set to make a number of call ups today, and most notable of those is Philip Humber, the Mets 2004 first round draft pick.
Dave Williams was also recalled and will start tonight. Brian Bannister, Lastings Milledge, Ricky Ledee, and Kelly Stinnett were called up as well.
Mike Pelfrey is headed to St.
Lucie where he will be treated for a minor back problem.
Here is a rundown of yesterday's minor league action, courtesy of the always amazing Toby's Mets Minor League Report….

Mike Pelfrey returned from a strained right lat muscle Saturday for Class AAA
Norfolk. He was on a strict pitch count and allowed one hit in
three scoreless innings against Richmond.
Mack's Mets posts an interesting article of minor leaguers who might have worn out their welcome in the Mets system and might be clogging up the system. Mack gives a list of players who might be good candidates for a flushing to make room for new talent.
Mack also makes a great observation that, although the Mets seemed to have some issues right now with their starting pitching, soon they could have a surplus of young major league ready arms.
And what if Phil Humber goes lights out in AFL + wows us in spring training?
(Also… is it my imagination or does the projected growth of Deolis Guerra seem to correspond to the end of Pedro’s contract?)

From Inside Pitch Magazine…
Bannister struck out five and walked one. News out of Norfolk is that Oliver Perez has rediscovered his velocity in the Mets attempt to bring him back to being a power pitcher after he was tinkered with in Pittsburg to become more of a finesse pitcher.
Reports have indicated Perez's velocity – which once ranked him in the upper echelon of young pitching talent - to be renewed.
Pitching against the same Charlotte club on Saturday, Perez struck out
11 and allowed just one hit in seven shutout innings, facing just three
batters over the minimum and notching his first victory as a member of
the Tides.
Perez walked two and threw two wild pitches in the performance, and is
1-2 with a 6.05 ERA in four starts with the Mets organization. In 19.1
innings, he has allowed 13 earned runs, 12 walks and 26 strikeouts.
Evan MacLane has been impressive as well, pitching a complete game shutout recently. His 92 strikesouts rank fifth in the organization.

Norfolk Tides website reports…
Bannister (1-3) was spectacular in his fifth rehab start for an
injured hamstring. The 25-year-old right-hander allowed just three
hits, striking out seven without walking a batter. He threw just 85
pitches in the contest, 60 of which were for strikes, and he allowd
just one batter to reach second base in the contest.
Bannister would be a dark horse candidate to replace Pedro in the rotation should he need extended rest for his strained calf.
Toby's Mets Minor League Report reminds us that Bannister would be on short rest to replace Pedro's scheduled start, not a particular good idea considering Bannister is coming off an injury.
Toby reports that Evan MacLane pitches today for the Tides at 2PM and Phil Humber throws tonight for Binghamton.
Edgardo Alfonzo has now hit safely in 13 of his last 14 starts, singled in
the second inning and homered to lead off the fourth.
The 32-year-old
raised his average to .276 in 25 games with Norfolk, and he is now
hitting .360 (18-for-50) over his last 14 starts.

home a run.
Sal Aguilar turned in a nice start,
allowing two runs in seven innings. He struck
out two and walked two.
Carlos Muniz blew the save in the ninth
by giving up a run, but Stewart’s blast made him a winner.
Sunday
Jose Coronado’s
three-run, eighth-inning single proved to be the margin, as St. Lucie battled
back from a big deficit and shaky starting pitching to beat
three-run single, you weren’t alone.
Coronado himself scored the third run on the play on a throwing error on
Vero’s catcher. This, my friends, is
minor league baseball.)
Carlos Muniz
pitched the final out of the game to pick up his 27th save of the season.
Hagerstown Suns (A-)
Saturday
Deolis Guerra (5-7) allowed just one run in his five innings on two hits. He walked three and struck out three,

Sunday
Jeramy Simmons (1-2) was sharp through seven innings, allowing
just two runs and four hits, but ran out of gas in the eighth, allowing a pair
of singles and then a double, which scored a run, to start off the inning.
Ryan Meyers couldn’t put out the fire,
giving up a single and two more runs before finally quelling the uprising.
Kevin Tomasiewicz slammed the door and
picked up his 15th save.
Howard Johnson will not be leaving the Tides after his suspension for leaving the team without permission.
We look forward to seeing HoJo at Shea this weekend for the 1986 30th anniversary celebration.

Dave Williams tossed a three hitter over
6.0 innings of work for the Mets Triple-A Tidewater affiliate, striking out six without walking a batter, yielding just an
unearned run in the 4th inning. The
27-year-old lefty has not allowed an earned run in 14.0 innings of
work since coming off the disabled list with a strained shoulder on
July 30.
Williams has allowed just six hits while
walking one and striking out nine, in that stretch.

Adam Rubin reports to us from his Daily News Blog that it's a good weekend to check out the Tides if you're near Buffalo.
Oliver Perez starts Friday, followed by Brian Bannister on Saturday and
possibly Mike Pelfrey on Sunday.
Check out the Tides website for more information, as they take on the Buffalo Bison.
Sphere: Related ContentIn Adam Rubin's Daily News “Blog”, he gives a lengthy rundown on Lastings Millidge
Milledge had the least experience in right, which can be tricky at
windy, on-the-water Harbor Park, the Tides’ home. He slammed into the
wall hard going after one foul ball, but came away unfazed.
GM Omar Minaya has said he wouldn’t hesitate promoting
Milledge if needed, though that’s not expected soon, especially with
Beltran’s MRI coming up clean after being reviewed in New York
yesterday. Had Beltran needed to go on the DL, Willie Randolph said it was more likely the Mets would have recalled Victor Diaz and used Endy Chavez
in center. Still, Milledge could be up before September, though an
injury likely would be required, since he’s not going to sit on the
bench.
Center field has become perhaps the deepest position for the Mets’
organization, with the top three prospects all leadoff hitters, too.
Double-A’s Carlos Gomez, also 20, is a rawer version of Milledge, but thought of just as highly. And 17-year-old Fernando Martinez,
signed for $1.4 million last summer, is hitting .333 at low-A
Hagerstown despite being the youngest player in any organization on a
full-season minor-league team.
Rubin gives updates on some other notable folks in the Mets minor league system including Mike Pelfrey, Henry Owens, Chris Shelton, Willie Callazo, Evan Maclane..
Heres a list of the organizations leaders…
