Mets first baseman Mike Carp, who is currently in Double-A Binghamton, was named the Eastern League Player Of The Week. Carp currently leads the Eastern League with a .895 slugging percentage and is tied for first with 18 hits, 13 RBIs and 4 home runs. At his blog minorleagueball.com, John Sickels has posted his 2008 edition of the New York Mets Prospects. Fernando Martinez ranks in at #1 followed by in order Deolis Guerra, Carlos Gomez, and Kevn Mulvey. John ranks Philip Humber at #7.
I am a big fan of Jon Niese’s but I dont feel he should be ranked ahead then Humber. Other then that, for the most part though, I agree with his list.
Overall our system has some talented pitchers with some good potential such as Scott Moviel, Brant Rustich, Eddie Kunz, & Nathan Vineyard who could possibly make an impact at the big league level this year, but when you look at the hitters all you see is Fernando, Gomez, and possibly Mike Carp becoming successful major league players. Unfortunately this shows how weak the Mets really are offensivley in the system.
Nick Evans and Brahiam Maldonado are two guys that definatley get overlooked in the Mets farm system and I am very excited to see what they both do in 2008.

Adam Rubin on his New York Daily News blog relays the final numbers for the Mets representatives.

Sphere: Related ContentFirst base prospect Mike Carp is playing in the Arizona League in hopes of regaining the form he lost after suffering a finger injury this season. According to MLB.com’s Kevin Czerwinksi, Carp is working with Tim Teufel, who coaches the team, to find how and why his swing changed after his injury. According to Carp:
The injury resulted in some bad habits that you just can’t feel. When I was up there at the plate, I had the same mindset. But when I broke it down I realized that it wasn’t me. And I’ve noticed the last couple of weeks that it wasn’t me.
Carp had been with Double-A Binghamton, and suffered a broken ring finger and was out for just over a month.
Hopefully Teufel can help him refind his groove, with Carlos Delgado’s less than impressive numbers this season and no more Grandpa Franco on backup, Carp improving in the Fall League followed by a nice spring could result in him getting a shot, especially if Delgado gets hurt. With Jeff Conine retired, and Shawn Green most likely gone the newly resigned Marlon Anderson is the only other first base option at the moment.

They consider him
a rare talent, a player who can hit for average and power while
fielding at a Gold Glove caliber, which was why they engaged in a
bidding war before paying him a $1.4 million signing bonus in July 2005.
Adam Rubin on his Daily News Mets Blog relays this quote from first-base prospect Mike Carp on Martinez.
“He’s got a cannon in the outfield,” Carp said. “He’s got good power
potential. He uses the whole field. He hits the ball really well the
other way, which is unheard of for somebody as young as him. He was
able to come in with a team that had been together for a while and
really play his role and fill in. He batted leadoff for us and really
did a good job of getting on base and helping us out.”
The thought of Martinez, Beltran and Gomez or Milledge in the same outfield someday to go along with Wright and Reyes has me feeling quite excited about the future of the Metropolitans.
