Mike Cameron, now a Brewer, and according to CBS Sportsline will be seeing a neurologist tomorrow to make sure he isn’t suffering for post concussion syndrome, or as we call it here at the Foot, being a wimp. He blames it all on the collision with Carlos Beltran that ended his season so long ago.
So almost three years ago Cameron ran into someone, and needs to see a doctor now because he thinks its what is causing his problems. And he wants to use illegal stimulants. Maybe…just maybe…its time to hang it up Mike. Hey, I liked Cameron. Not as much as I liked other former Met outfielder Cliff Floyd. Or as much as Mookie, Daryl, Dykstra, Mazz, Ed Kranepool, Shawn Green, Nady. But like…more than Vince Coleman or Dave Newhan I guess. The point..if I can still remember it…is retire Mike. You’re not going to get to use banned stimulants. If you’re not better from a 2005 injury, you’re probably not going to get better. We’ll miss you. Just not as much as we miss Nady.
Ken Rosenthal at Fox Sports reports, according to major-league sources, that Mike Cameron has reached a preliminary agreement with the Brewers on a one-year contract with a club option for 2009, pending a physical.
Rosenthals sources indicated that the Yankees would have been less inclined to persue Johan Santana had they acquired Cameron, citing the inability to absorb both contracts.
Cameron will miss the first 25 games next season while serving a suspension for testing positive for a banned stimulant.
Tim Dierkes at MLB Trade Rumors lists the top 50 remaining free agents.
Barry Bonds, Mike Cameron and Bartolo Colon are listed as the top three in that order. Dierkes had originally predicted Colon would land in Seattle, which he believes could still could happen but sees the Royals, Nationals, Mets, Rangers, and Phillies as possible destinations as well.
Ken Mandel of MLB.com reports that the Philadelphia Phillies are interested in bringing in former New York Mets outfielder Mike Cameron to play centerfield.
Cameron, 34, hit .242 last season with 21 home runs and 78 RBIs. St. Louis, Texas and the White Sox are also believed to be in pursuit of Cameron.
CBSSportsline reports that talks to keep Mike Cameron in San Diego have ceased. Its best summarized with the statement his agent Mike Nicotera gave the press:
“Mike’s tenure in San Diego is over.”
While Cameron was at one point considered to be in decent demand in the off season, he has since been hit with a 25 game ban for stimulant use.
Cameron signed with the Mets in the winter of 03 and led the team in most offensive categories in his initial season, but found himself the odd man out when the Mets won the Carlos Beltran sweepstakes. He never fully adapted to his corner outfield role, colliding with Beltran on a play that injured both. He was traded to the Padres for Xavier Nady.
The AP reports that former Met Mike Piazza has declined arbitration with the A’s. If he signs elsewhere they would now get a draft pick to replace him. He is joined by ex Met Mike Cameron, potential Met starter Livian Hernandez and 11 others who choose to reject arbitration.
Hopefully Mike knows what he’s doing, because the rumor mill hasn’t exactly been jumping with potential offers, especially seeing as last anyone heard he might be forced to the Japanese League to extend his career. Seeing as Lo Duca so far hasn’t seemed to get more than a one year backup catcher job offer, and is healthier and closer to have last played everyday than Mike, I don’t know if there is another team out there that will bring him in.
In Todd Gallagher’s book “Andy Roddick Beat Me With A Frying Pan”, Mike Cameron reveals that he has played Major League Baseball while intoxicated with alcohol.
It’s not as common as greenies, but big leaguers have been known to step on the field liquored up. … Almost every current major leaguer I spoke to knew of players who had stepped on the field under the influence.
When asked what the signs were, the players typically responded the way Giant Ryan Klesko and Padre Jake Peavy did: ‘I just knew.’ Interestingly, another Padre, center fielder Mike Cameron, had a more intimate experience with game-day tipsiness:
“Sh-t, I’ve played drunk.” When? “New York City.” What were the circumstances “I went four for four with two jacks and eight ribbies. I’m not saying that’s the only day I played drunk, but that was the best one.”
AOL Fanhouse does the math and figures out the exact day when Cameron played drunk, using the statistics he cited. Cameron only had one game with right RBI, which was an afternoon game on August 19, 2001 against the New York Yankees while he was a Seattle Mariner.
Former New York Mets outfielder Mike Cameron will receive a 25-game suspension for a banned stimulant violation.
Mike Cameron spoke about the situation with the Padres’ flagship radio station…
“The one thing I wanted to make sure was explained is, no steroids,” Cameron told AM 1090, the Padres’ flagship radio station. “I never took nothing like that before in my life. That would be 50 games, and that would affect me a whole lot more.”
Cameron, 34, hit .242 in 151 games with 21 HRs, 78 RBIs, 88 Runs and 18 stolen bases for the Padres last season.
Fox Sports reports that ex-Met Mike Cameron is working with the Padres on a contract extension. According to Fox, Cameron is seeking a 3 year deal, while the Padres are hoping for a shorter contract due to Cameron's age.
Cameron played CF for the Mets, and was moved to right after the signing of Carlos Beltran. His career ended with the Mets with an off season deal for Xavier Nady, and finished his playing time hurt after an on field collision with Beltran.
I liked Cameron as a Met,and its a shame he left the team in the offseason after leaving due to injury. Its hard to say what the Padres will do. It looks like there will be some CF talent out there next year, but I guess it comes down to if they prefer to risk spending more money, over risking Cameron staying healthy. He would be in his late 30s by the time a three year deal expired. That being said, with the likes of Julio Franco and Tom Glavine on our team, who's to say late 30s is too old to play ball.
