According to the Associated Press, the Rockies have agreed to a minor league deal with free agent 2B Marcus Giles, that includes an invitation to spring training.
Presumably, Giles will have the chance to compete for the starting 2B job, because former Mets’ and former Rockies’ 2B Kaz Matsui signed with the Astros earlier this offseason.
I’ve never really liked him or the way he plays, but I do think he’ll have a good shot at the starting job there.
Strange to think in 2003 he was an All-Star.

In today’s Newsday, Ken Davidoff considers the Mets second base possibilities. Luis Castillo is still very much is in running for returning. David Eckstein and Padre Geoff Blum are mentioned as well. Matthew Cerrone at Mets Blog recently mentioned the Mets might want to consider inviting free agent Marcus Giles to camp if he doesn’t receive offers.
I still think Castillo is the best option, with Eckstein just behind him. I wouldn’t want Giles starting but I would certainly consider putting him on the bench along with Gotay as a back up option.
