Jon Heyman of SI.com says Omar Minaya is “itching” to make a deal. The Mets want to hold onto top prospects Fernando Martinez, Jon Niese, Eddie Kunz and Robert Parnell. Heyman says that Minaya is spending more time on the relief situation.

According to the NY Post highly regarded and much sought after Mets lefty pitching prospect Jonathon Niese has been promoted to Triple-A New Orleans. The 21 year old will make his first Triple-A start Wednesday.
Also, the AP is reporting that the Yankees Jorge Posada will have season ending shoulder surgery.
Jon Niese is a 6′3″, 190lbs left handed pitcher who has the unique honor of being able to say he was born on the same day the Mets won the 1986 World Series.
Niese was drafted in the 7th round of the 2005 First- Year Player Draft by the Mets. Niese previously pitched for the New York Mets for the St. Lucie Mets and Hagerstown Suns in 2006.
In 2006, Niese had a 3.93 ERA at Low A and a 4.50 ERA at High A. He averages more than a strikeout per inning. He has a 88-91 mph fastball and a swooping plus curveball.
Niese has a little ways to go in terms of his mechanics, particularly working on balancing his upper and lower body in his delivery. His changeup is not particularly impressive.
Niese has a 3.12 ERA this spring.
The Mets play host to the Atlanta Braves today in St Lucie. Pitching for the Mets will be Jon Niese. Pitching for the Braves will be Tim Hudson.
Lineup
INGAME:
C Raul Casanova has given the Mets a 1-0 lead with a solo homer
Jon Niese has pitched 4 shutout innings so far..
I like Niese alot, at this point I might give him a shot over Pelfrey AND El Duque.
At his blog minorleagueball.com, John Sickels has posted his 2008 edition of the New York Mets Prospects. Fernando Martinez ranks in at #1 followed by in order Deolis Guerra, Carlos Gomez, and Kevn Mulvey. John ranks Philip Humber at #7.
I am a big fan of Jon Niese’s but I dont feel he should be ranked ahead then Humber. Other then that, for the most part though, I agree with his list.
Overall our system has some talented pitchers with some good potential such as Scott Moviel, Brant Rustich, Eddie Kunz, & Nathan Vineyard who could possibly make an impact at the big league level this year, but when you look at the hitters all you see is Fernando, Gomez, and possibly Mike Carp becoming successful major league players. Unfortunately this shows how weak the Mets really are offensivley in the system.
Nick Evans and Brahiam Maldonado are two guys that definatley get overlooked in the Mets farm system and I am very excited to see what they both do in 2008.

Here's some highlights from yesterday's minor league action courtesy of Toby's Mets Minor League Report…
Dave Williams struck out seven in five scoreless innings Tuesday in his second start for the Rookie GCL Mets.
Williams
was placed on Triple-A Norfolk's DL in mid-June with a strained
shoulder. He seems ready to rejoin Norfolk's rotation now, but the
injury has left him with little chance of a callup to the Mets before
September.
