On Fox Sports MLB pre-game show Ken Rosenthal reported that “Willie Randolph is one losing patch away from being fired” and if that does happen Rosenthal said, “Howard Johnson and Rick Peterson will also be fired”.
Multiple news sources are reporting that the Mets are unlikely to bring in Rudy Jaramillo. Those sources primarily site that Jaramillo, though skilled, might appear too much as a possible replacement for Randolph, therefor undermining his authority. A prime factor appears to be the fact that Jaramillo was one of the original candidates for Willie Randolphs job.
Adam Rubin further reports that Omar plans to bring back the vast majority of the coaching staff, the primary exception being Rickey. No word on who would replace Rickey yet on Willie’s staff.
Much as it would be nice to see Rudy come to NY, can’t really fault the logic involved. It would do no good to improve one aspect of the coaching staff if the overall move weakened the managerial system (Willie). Likewise, I like HoJo, I think he does great work, especially with David Wright, and wouldn’t want to see him gone.
As far as Ricky goes, I don’t see his departure as major. I think he was better as a special assistant, coming in for spring training or to work with one or two players, primarily on patience at the plate and base running. But he never seemed a good choice as a full time coach.
According to TCPalm the three 'internal' finalists for the 2007 Mets third base job are Gary Carter, Ken Oberkfell, and Howard Johnson.
New York Mets manager Willie Randolph and general manager Omar Minaya could make the decision before the annual winter meetings, which begin Monday in Orlando.
“If (Johnson) gets it, hey, great,” Carter said. “He's as deserving as I feel I am.”
HoJo said “If I don't get it, I certainly hope Gary gets it. And I feel like, if I don't get it and Gary doesn't get it, I hope Ken gets it.”
Carter said he might consider coming back as the St. Lucie manager, but he could be promoted to the Triple-A manager if Oberkfell is named the major-league team's third-base coach.
I wish the Mets would consider Rickey Henderson for the third base job. I think it would be great bringing back. Not only do I feel he would do well as a third base coach, but also he could help out Jose Reyes and the other young players on the team whether its stealing bsaes or working on their hitting. If Rickey doesnt get the job though, id be fine bringing up the Kid, Obie, or HoJo, with Gary Carter being my preference.
Willie Randolph at the time was a Yankee, and didn't have much love for the 86 Mets. However he did have a few guys he rooted for over on the other side of town when the Yankees were the other team in New York, reports David Lennon in Newsday.
Randolph earned six World Series rings with the Yankees. But despite
his pinstriped past, he acknowledges there was something special about
the '86 Mets, and that year still touches the next generation of stars.
David Wright was too young to remember much about the 1986 team, but he's been a student and fan of the Mets from the minute he could pick up a baseball.
“You hear all of the stories,” Wright said. “Not only did they take
care of business on the field — obviously, they were a great team and
put up great numbers — it just seemed like they had such a close
relationship off the field. They were like a group of brothers. That's
what I admire about those guys.
“They won together, they lost together, they fought together. To
me, they seemed like the ultimate team. You had a lot of different
characters from a lot of different backgrounds, and for everybody to
come together like that and accomplish a single goal, that was the most
impressive thing. Just the way they had each other's back.”
Howard Johnson will not be leaving the Tides after his suspension for leaving the team without permission.
We look forward to seeing HoJo at Shea this weekend for the 1986 30th anniversary celebration.
The Bergan Record reports that Darryl Strawberry and the Mets are no longer on speaking terms, because
of a dispute over payment of his deferred salaries, according to a
person familiar with the situation. A recent break-off in negotiations
led to Strawberry's decision to boycott the 1986 reunion at Shea
Stadium on Aug. 19.
Strawberry has 1.4 million in deferred money due to him, he asked as a favor, that the Mets pay it as a lump sum now but the present day value is $800,000.
The Mets response was this
Howard Johnson's return is in jeopardy too as he was recently suspended as batting coach for Mets minor league affiliate Triple-A Norfolk Tides for leaving the team for a family affair without permission.
Every year, just before the season, Hot Foot gets together and has
their annual viewing of the classic Mets 1986 video, A Year To
Remember.
Nothing gets Hot Foot more pumped up for the upcoming season
than seeing Mookie say “magic wands, mirrors, all i know is we won the
ballgame” and the guy going to the Mets / Astros playoff game with his
two friends who when asked “Whose gonna win
tonight?” replies, with full brooklyn inflection “The Astros……. CMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMON” Not to mention
the scene where our very own Hot Foot, Roger McDowell demonstrates the
perfectly designed Hot Foot along with his assistant Howard Johnson.
How does he do it?!?!
The VHS tape we have been
viewing it on for 20 years has seen better days. HotFootJr seriously
needs to get that thing archived to DVD before the wheels come off. I
don't believe you can truly call yourself a Mets fan unless you are
familiar with every second of this video, I know Hot Foot is.
Pick up a copy of the 1986 World Series DVD set at Amazon.com , and you'll be supporting Hot Foot when you do it. The Foot thanks you.
