Quoted by Bob Herzog of Newsday, P Duaner Sanchez will “definitely” pitch again this year. There is no timetable from his return, but he has been doing some light work on a stationary bike.
Even though he showed up late and overweight to camp, I get the feeling Duaner is working hard to get back on the mound… The Mets bullpen has been superb for the most part, but Heilman has been sketchy and most of the other guys haven't been tested yet… Between Sanchez and Guillermo Mota, who is serving a 50 game drug suspension, some cuts will have to be made eventually… It's still a while away though…
Duaner Sanchez does not yet know when he will begin throwing off the mound, reports John Delcos on his Lower Hudson blog.
“We just need to get him right,’’ pitching coach Rick Peterson said.
That will take time.
Yesterday Sanchez was tossing a baseball on flat ground at 130feet, reports The Daily News. He needs to increase the distance to 150-160 feet before taking a step
on a pitching slope.
“I'm just working on strength,” said Sanchez, who went 5-1 with a 2.60 ERA in 49 games last year with the Mets.
Relief pitchers do not need as much practice in spring to prepare for the season, so its entirely possible Duaner will be ready when Opening Day rolls around.
Since Duaner Sanchez went down, Aaron Heilman is 1-1 with 5 holds, 13 hits, 7 runs, 7 walks, and 11 strikeouts in 15.1 innings, a 4.17 ERA.
Bob Herzog in Newsday, gives a detailed account of the events that led to Duaner Sanchez's season ending injury…
“The speed limit is 55 mph and the problem is nobody's going 55 at
that time of night,” Lt. Pat Santangelo said. “This could have been a
lot worse. That time of night is when you have the real horrendous
wrecks.”
Sanchez, who was riding in the rear seat, apparently used his
pitching arm to shield his head during a collision with the cab's
bullet-proof partition, Dawin said in a phone interview. “He put his
arm up so he wouldn't hurt his head.”
Minaya said doctors decided to operate immediately.
“He woke up [yesterday] and he was really in pain,” Minaya said.
“The doctors realized the ligaments in the area were torn. It was just
a severe injury.”
Dawin said his brother was taken in for surgery about 3:30 p.m. yesterday and hadn't come out by 7 p.m.
“He was feeling a little down because he's out for the rest of the
season, but at least he knows he'll pitch again,” Dawin said.
Santangelo said the taxi was traveling in the right lane on
southbound I-95 when the Ford suddenly swerved across four lanes of
traffic and struck the driver's door on the cab.
“The taxi spun out of control and went across the roadway to its left and hit the median concrete barrier wall,” he said.
Four people in the taxi, including Sanchez, and two in the Ford
were taken to local hospitals, Santangelo said. He said charges were
pending against the driver of the Ford.
“We were told that there was no damage to the muscles he needs to
pitch but that there was a bone protruding from his clavicle,” Dawin
said. “I'm not sure he was wearing a seat belt. All I know is we were
talking when the car crashed into us.”
Eddie Coleman spoke to Chris Russo with his Mets report on WFAN…
Coleman started off announcing that Duaner Sanchez was undergoing surgery as we speak, ending his season.
Coleman heard that Duaner and his cousin went to get something to eat at 1AM, in hindsight he wished he would have taken room service instead.
Exiting 62nd street, the accident occurred. He was not wearing his seatbelt, put his arm up to brace himself from the partition.
The injury is a severe seperation with torn ligaments.
Nady was upset about leaving, essentially a south florida cab driver sends him from a playoff bound team to the celler dwelling Pirates. The Mets should be better defensively in right field.
Roberto Hernandez said he's fully rested in a good place right now, they scaled back on him in the last few weeks in Pittsburg.
Milledge will get the games Nady ordinarily played. He will also fill in for Floyd as well. Coleman thinks they can get by and match the Nady numbers. Sanchez was a guy that surprised the Mets, and he pitched very well for them.
Giants said today, the Mets didnt put Milledge in a package for Jason Schmidt.
Discussing Glavine, he was not happy with being taken out early. Coleman said he thinks he lacks confidence right now. He needs to command things a bit better.
Coleman said he could see a situation when Pelfrey pitches tonight and goes back to the minors, so they can get Maine another start. Unless Pelfrey wows the Mets, he see them going with the veteran arms in the playoffs, Pedro, Glavine, Trachsel and El Duque.
Pitch count was down for Pedro last outing, which was a good sign. He's going to back out there on Thursday. He sees plenty of opportunites to scale back his starts to give him more rest in September.
I was upset by two things yesterday. News that Duaner Sanchez was potentially lost for the season in a freak taxi accident (what is it with Mets and taxis? can we get these guys an armored truck for transportation?) and losing a favorite player of mine in Xavier Nady. However, my rational side reminds me that Endy Chavez is a vast improvement over Nady defensively and combined with Lastings Milledge, the Mets likely will not lose much offensively without Nady. To top it off, the Mets add a proven set up man in Roberto Hernandez who arguably was the Mets MVP in 2005. Bert compiled a 2.60 ERA last season and currently holds a 2.90 ERA.
Duaner Sanchez was outstanding in the first half of the season but was more human as the midterm neared. If he is able to return for the playoffs, the Mets will have a ridiculously deep bullpen to ride them through October. If he isnt, they still have a solid set up in Bert.
I will miss seeing X as part of this special season, his contributions will not be forgotten. However I am excited to see the Lastings Milledge era begin again, hopefully with some lessons learned from his first time around.
Omar Minaya denying reports of Oliver Perez for Scott Linebrink.
Omar Minaya asked to comment on if a deal will happen and Omar said no comment.
Asked his thoughts on Scott Linebrink and he said he can't comment on other players.
Duaner Sanchez not done for the year as of yet, could be back in 4 to 6 weeks.

Adam Rubin gives us a countdown to when David Wright and Jose Reyes become very wealthy young men…
In New York, with Wright and Reyes particularly, there's no danger
of them leaving that first year they're free agents. It just may cost
more money.
There are some exceptions, but free agency comes after six full
years of major-league service time. After this year, here are the
service time totals. (After three full years you're eligible for
arbitration, with some exceptions.)
Reyes: 3 years, 111 days …. so he'll be arbitration
eligible for the first time this winter, and not eligible for free
agency until after the 2009 season.
Wright: 2 years, 75 days … not arbitration eligible until after '07 and not a free agent until after '10.
Sanchez: 3 years, 75 days … arbitration eligible for the first time this winter, and a free agent after '09 season.
Heilman: 2 years, 123 days … same as Wright … not arbitration eligible until after '07, and not a free agent until after '10.
