Yankees Bury Bernie?

In case you don’t remember, on Sunday there was controversy surrounding the construction of the new Yankees Stadium, as a construction worker threw a David Ortiz jersey into the cement of the stadium.  To avoid a potential curse, the Yankees dug up the jersey.  For a full recap on the actions, head over to SI.

In a parody of that story, humor newspaper The Onion wrote an article titled, “Yankees Bury Bernie Williams Under New Stadium for Good Luck.”

The article reads:

According to team sources, the instant the 39-year-old Williams was completely submerged in the rapidly setting structural material, stopping his voice as his lungs and mouth filled with concrete, the sun broke through the clouds and shone on the yet-incomplete field. Yankees part-owner Hank Steinbrenner called the occurrence a sign indicating that the “Curse Of A Red Sox Fan’s David Ortiz Jersey” had been reversed, and that God was once again on the Yankees’ side.

Very funny, check it out, I couldn’t stop laughing.

The jersey is now up for auction on eBay, with the proceeds going to charity.

Helton To Red Sox?

According to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com, the Red Sox and Rockies are in serious discussions about a deal that would send 1B Todd Helton to the Red Sox for P Craig Hansen, OF Jacoby Ellsbury and another prospect.

Rosenthal
notes that a possible dealbreaker would be how much of Helton’s
contract the Rockies are willing to take on. Helton is guaranteed $90.1
million the next six seasons.

If this trade goes down, the Red Sox are expected to move current 1B Kevin Youkilis to third and ship off 3B Mike Lowell, most likely to San Diego for some relief help.

…why
are the red sox considering this trade? helton is on the downside of
his career and the club will be stuck with him for another six seasons.
not to mention the talent they are giving up could be used to get a
closer such as
Chad Cordero

…as for the rockies, if this deal goes down, they are making out like bandits in this trade as well as the Jason Jennings deal. they are going to be a team to watch in two or three years with all talent they’ve brought in…

Papi : Jeter Is No MVP

The New York papers today jumped all over this one, so I felt it would be an interesting topic to share.

“If I get 50 home runs and 10 more RBIs, that's going to be a round
number that no one else in the American League will have,” Ortiz,
Boston's designated hitter, told The Boston Globe. “But they'll vote
for a position player, use that as an excuse.

“They're talking about Jeter a lot, right? He's done a great job,
he's having a great season, but Jeter is not a 40-homer hitter or an
RBI guy. It doesn't matter how much you've done for your ballclub; the
bottom line is, the guy who hits 40 homers and knocks in 100, that's
the guy you know helped your team win games.

“Don't get me wrong - he's a great player, having a great season,
but he's got a lot of guys in that lineup. Top to bottom, you've got a
guy who can hurt you. Come hit in this lineup, see how good you can be.”

Gotta hand it to Papi, he's not afraid to speak his mind, but I think he may have put his foot in his mouth. Jeter responded.

“I don't have to do it in his lineup,” he said.
“I'm not thinking about winning the MVP. We're talking about winning
the division. No one's focus here is on individual awards. We still got
something to play for this season.”

Ortiz is hitting .288 with 48
homers and 127 RBI. Jeter is hitting .346 with 13 homers and 91 RBI as
a No. 2 hitter. He is also having one of his best seasons at shortstop.

Jeter said it wasn't his place to debate who deserves the award.

“It's
always lovely, nice, to hear your name mentioned when people talk about
those kind of things,” he said. “But to be honest with you, I'm trying
to win a division.

“I just go out and try and play every day,
help the team win. Whether that's getting a hit, bunting a guy over,
hitting a ground ball to second, making a play, stealing a base — it
doesn't really make a difference.”

Jeter is right to stay out of the fray, it really is more about winning and making the postseason, something Ortiz may be feeling the heat from and the frustration of being edged out of an MVP once again despite putting up ridiculous offensive numbers. I'm just happy this kind of debate isn't happening over in Flushing. Howard may win MVP because of his breakthrough season, but we're happy to have a couple of MVPs of our own in Beltran and Reyes.

Who Is Hot Foot?

Hot Foot was founded by a group of life long friends who also happen to be die hard Mets fans. Hot Foot comes from the great 1986 Mets relief pitcher Roger McDowell who would use a wad of gum to stick a roll of cigarettes to the back of unsuspecting teammates shoes and light them on fire, thus a Hot Foot. Hot Foot is inspired by the same rock and roll baseball mentality of Roger and the 86 Mets, and uncensored commentary with news, notes, rumors and analysis revolving around the world of the Amazin New York Mets.
