Former Met Chris Woodward was waived by the Yankees yesterday, and has been claimed by the Phillies. According to USA Today, he has signed a minor league contract.
Now that we seem to have screwed up the Ruben Gotay situation, why didn’t we make a move for a cheap Chris Woodward? He knows many of our players, he can handle playing in NY, he’s cheap, and he can sub in pretty much all four infield and the corner outfield positions. I remember him talking about having like five different gloves so that he could play whatever position the Mets needed him for. Plus, then I could break out my retro Woodward jersey. Its pretty sweet.
Hat tip to Rob for the news.
Sphere: Related ContentI had a chance to catch up with former Mets IF Chris Woodward while covering the Yankees in Tampa for Gotham Baseball Magazine. We all remember Chris as a super -sub for the Mets in 2005 and 2006.
He discussed his career outlook, differences between both New York organizations, and his experience with each fan base. Chris will also talk about his three homer game in 2002 with Toronto, the 2006 NLCS, and his thoughts on the Mets 2007 collapse.
Most interesting is his take on his future. Woodward elaborates on the life stresses that play a role in a ballplayers decision to continue their career. Click here to listen to each interview.
Sphere: Related ContentIn his blog at the Daily News, Adam Rubin reports that ex Met Chris Woodward has adopted a son, Mason. Woodward is currently hitting .222 with 12 hits in 54 at bats as a Brave, which is about his BA last year as a Met, and has split his games between second, short and third for a total of 10 starts.
He may never have been a great bat, even in his better year he was only hitting about 280, but Woodward was more than usefull as the utility guy. For the most part, he could play anything but pitcher or catcher. In fact, in his two seasons with the Mets he started at least 2 games in each infield position. Mostly at second last year, and mostly at third the year before. He also 36 appearances in the outfield. How many other bench guys are out there that could pretty much come in to start or as a defensive sub at pretty much any position (ok, maybe not centerfield). I think I'll always remember the interviews they'd have with Woodward about how he owned something like seven gloves because he had to be ready to get put in anywhere in the field. Well good luck to Chris and his wife and their new son.

Mets Blog is reporting by way of Ken Rosenthal on Fox Sports that the Mets may be in talks to acquire cathcer Danny Ardoin, 32, was designated for assignment by the Rockies last Friday and jack of all trades, Luis Gonzales.
Gonzalez,
27, primarily is a second baseman, but he has played all four infield
positions in the past two seasons as well as left field and right. He
would give the Mets protection if Jose Valentin again is slowed by his
right hamstring injury. Chris Woodward is currently the Mets' only
backup infielder.
In return for Ardoin and Gonzalez, the Rockies
likely would receive Class AA right-hander Matt Lindstrom, 26, or Class
AA right-hander Henry Owens, 27.
