ESPN is reporting that the Brewers and Indians have reached an agreement that will send CC Sabathia to the Brewers. In a deal similar to the one that brought Santana to the Mets, the Indians will receive prospects including AA outfielder LaPorta. The other players involved have either not been named or merely not released at this time.
If I’m the Chicago Cubs, this is when I get nervous. Considering they’re a club with a long history of falling apart, the Brewers acquisition of what was considered the top free agent pitcher of the upcoming off season has to be a bit worrisome. The Brewers always have the possibility of making a decent run, through their standard use of small ball, sacrifice bunts, and other nonexciting ways to victory. Which is probably better than the Mets way of big names and spectacular implosions. The only big question now is should Sabathia lead them to their first post season since the Reagan administration, will they lock him into an extension?
Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com is reporting that the Cleveland Indians could look to offer an extension to their Cy-Young award winning ace, C.C. Sabathia. As long as the offer isn’t so high that it could potentially cripple the franchise financially, the team remains interested in getting Sabathia locked up long-term.
The Indians’ intention is to have the situation settled, one way or another, before pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training on Feb. 14.
In a field of many worthy contenders, C.C. Sabathia was named the winner of the 2007 American League Cy Young Award.Sabathia went 19-7 with a 3.21 ERA and 209 strikeouts, pitching a major league-high 241 innings.
Sabathia received 19 of 28 first-place votes and finished with 119 points. Josh Beckett was second with eight first-place votes and 86 points, John Lackey got the other first-place vote and came in third. Fausto Carmona came in fourth.
If the Indians are unable to come to terms with Sabathia, who is in his final season with the team, they may listen to offers with his price now reaching its apex.
