Friday Afternoon Hot Stove Rundown

  • The Baltimore Orioles asked the Los Angeles Dodgers for outfielder Matt Kemp, third baseman Andy LaRoche and 19-year-old left-hander Clayton Kershaw in return for SP Erik Bedard.
  • If the Yankees package a prospect with OF Hideki Matsui, it might be enough to get SP Noah Lowry or RP Jonathan Sanchez from the San Francisco Giants. SP Tim Lincecum is considered untouchable.
  • The Dodgers are now entertaining offers for OF Andre Ethier after signing Andruw Jones to a two-year deal yesterday.
  • The Yankees have offered RP LaTroy Hawkins a one-year, $3.5 million contract.
  • The Royals are not currently interested in OF Sammy Sosa as previously reported.
  • Recently released second baseman Jorge Cantu appears close to signing with the Florida Marlins. The team has also offered RP Scott Nestor to the Phillies for veteran infielder Wes Helms. Finally, the team is leaning toward retaining utility man Alfredo Amezaga, who the Mets have been rumored to be interested iin.
  • The Toronto Blue Jays are waiting to hear back from former Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca, who currently has a one-year contract offer on the table.
  • The San Francisco Giants are no longer interested in Orioles SS Miguel Tejada.
  • The San Diego Padres have offered OF Milton Bradley a one-year contract.

  • Dodgers, Andruw Agree On Two-Year Deal

Andrew Kamenetzky of the Los Angeles Times reports that the Los Angeles Dodgers and centerfielder Andruw Jones have reportedly reach an agreement on a two-year contract worth $36 million. Jones will receive $9 million in 2008, $15 million in 2009, and a $12 million signing bonus.

That pushes Juan Pierre and the rest of his $36.5 million contract over the next four years to left field.

Jones, 30, one of the best defensive centerfielder’s to ever play the game, hit .222 with 26 home runs and 94 RBIs in a down year for the Atlanta Braves last season.

This would seem to make it more likely for the Dodgers to deal Matt Kemp or Andre Ethier in a package for a frontline starter.

    Dodgers Talking To Andruw Jones

John Delcos provides this report via his blog for the Journal News

Dodgers confirmed talking with center fielder Andruw Jones, who is coming off the worst season of his career at .222, 26 homers and 96 RBI. Jones is a 10-time Gold Glove winner and five-time All-Star. Torii Hunter got a five-year, $90-million deal from the Angels. That’s the starting point.

Delcos also reports that the Brewers are thinking about moving Ryan Bruan to left field and going after St. Louis third baseman Scott Rolen. Bruan had a poor defensive showing at third base last year.

    Thursday Hot Stove Buzz Rundown

Here’s whats brewing on the Hot Stove this Thursday morning…

    • Yorvit Torrealba’s agent told the Denver Post that he expects his client to make a decision regarding the Mets contract offer today. Tracy Ringolsby in the Rocky Mountain News reports that the Mets have offered Torrealba a two-year deal worth $9 million. The Denver Post is reporting it to be a three-year, $15 million deal.
    • Omar Minaya tells Ben Shpigel of the New York Times he has an idea of how much money it will take to sign his desired free-agent targets and knows which prospects and how many he would have to surrender to upgrade the Mets pitching staff.“Ideally, you’d always like a guy with 200-plus innings, you know what I’m saying?” Minaya said. “If for whatever reason Glavine does not come back, we have to look for a starting pitcher.”
    • Speaking of Tom Glavine, Mets.com reports that Tom is getting some advice on his future from the most famous Tom in Mets history, Mr. Tom Seaver.
    • Dan Graziano at the Star Ledger reports that the Yankees plan on continuing to pursue Mike Lowell even if they re-sign Alex Rodriguez. The Yankees plan on putting Lowell at first base.
    • Jon Heyman on SI.com reports that the Yankees and Rodriguez are discussing a 10 year, $280 million contract.
    • Buster Olney said on ESPN last night that he believes that Alex Rodriguez is taking a deeply discounted offer from the Yankees, 10-years for $220 million. I’ll believe this when I see it.
    • The San Diego Union Tribune reports that the Padres expect Geoff Blum to sign with the Astros, and will likely let Milton Bradley walk as well. The Padres are looking at Geoff Jenkins and Andruw Jones as their top free agent targets.
    • The St Louis Post Dispatch reports that Scott Rolen seems all but gone from St. Louis. The third baseman was reportedly unhappy with the letter he received from Tony La Russa that was an attempt to reconcile with Rolen.
    • The St Louis Post Dispatch also reports that the Cardinals have interest in Carlos Silva and Kyle Lohse.
    • 7Sports, a local Boston news television station, is reporting that the Braves, Angels, Cardinals and Yankees have all offered Mike Lowell four-year contracts worth between $55 million and $60 million.

    Ken Rosenthal’s Hot Stove Buzz

Ken Rosenthal shares some Hot Stove buzz today on Fox Sports.

Rosenthal believes the Dodgers would benefit most from the addition of Torii Hunter. There are many center fielders on the market including Aaron Rowand and Andruw Jones.

Rosenthal thinks Mariano Rivera is crazy if he doesn’t take the Yankees offer, but mentions that Rivera talked about possibly joining Joe Torre and the Dodgers to the Associated Press. The Dodgers would have a formidable bullpen with Jonathan Broxton, Takashi Saito and Rivera.

Rosenthal also writes that the Mets are divided on whether to make a strong push for free-agent right-hander Livan Hernandez. The Cardinals and Astros are also interested in Livan, who turns 33 in February (alledgedly).

Hernandez, Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux are the only major-league pitchers to make 30 or more starts in each of the past 10 seasons.

Crasnick Polls Baseball GMs On Hot Stove

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com polled baseball executives and GMs regarding what will happen this winter.

Asked where Alex Rodriguez would be playing next year, 7.5 of them out of 15 said the Los Angeles Angels, next on the list was the Mets with 3 votes.

When asked where Barry Bonds would be playing next year, most executives believed it would be in Oakland. Nearly every baseball executive preferred Torii Hunter over Andruw Jones.

14 of 15 executives believe Johan Santana would be pitching for the Twins on Opening Day 2008.

Among the pool of free agent pitchers, Bartolo Colon, Josh Fogg, Livan Hernandez, Kyle Lohse, Carlos Silva or Jeff Weaver, four people chose Silva, four chose Lohse, three chose Hernandez and three chose Colon, while nobody selected Weaver or Fogg.

    Rosenthal’s Latest On Cabrera, Others

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com believes the Angels have emerged as a most intriguing possibility for Marlins 3B Miguel Cabrera to land through a trade. The Dodgers, Red Sox and Yankees all have interest as well, however the Red Sox are trying to re-sign Mike Lowell and the comments from Yankees’ representative Hank Steinbrenner saying that he would not trade one of the big three young pitchers.

Rosenthal also adds that the Washington Nationals would like to sign CF Andruw Jones but will likely have a tough time chalking up the money it will take to get him. He also notes that he sees the Giants and White Sox as two potential suiters with the Dodgers a possibility. The Padres would be more involved with him if his price dropped.

The Phillies believe that CF Aaron Rowand may command a four-year, $52 million contract. Both the Astros and Mets remain interested in free agent 2B Luis Castillo. The Indians, Padres and Dodgers could also enter the mix pending decisions within their franchise. The Twins are one of the teams attempting to trade for Red Sox CF Coco Crisp, but the Red Sox are demanding too much in return it appears. Teams with too many starting pitchers may look to the trade market to get rid of them. Indians starter LHP Cliff Lee, Brewers RHP Dave Bush and LHP Chris Capuano are amongst the possible choices.

Rosenthal ends on one final note. The Washington Nationals would like to trade for another young major league-ready starter. Mets 2nd-round draft pick in 2006 Kevin Mulvey is among one of the choices that Rosenthal adds, with the other being the Twins Kevin Slowey.

With the Mets in need of bullpen help. Could we be looking at a trade for one of the Nationals relievers? Chad Cordero or Jon Rauch could help this team in the bullpen and the Nationals are looking to get younger. The Nationals reportedly have interest in OF Carlos Gomez as well.

How Will Braves Replace Andruw Jones?

The Braves will seek to replace Andruw Jones in centerfield but won’t be able to target Torii Hunter, Aaron Rowand, or Mike Cameron because of their payroll restrictions. David DeJesus and CoCo Crisp are considered by MLB Trade Rumors to be more likely options.

    Who Is Hot Foot?

Hot Foot was founded by a group of life long friends who also happen to be die hard Mets fans. Hot Foot comes from the great 1986 Mets relief pitcher Roger McDowell who would use a wad of gum to stick a roll of cigarettes to the back of unsuspecting teammates shoes and light them on fire, thus a Hot Foot. Hot Foot is inspired by the same rock and roll baseball mentality of Roger and the 86 Mets, and uncensored commentary with news, notes, rumors and analysis revolving around the world of the Amazin New York Mets.
