Kevin Kernan in the New York Post suggest that the Mets make a push to get Oakland A’s pitcher Dan Haren.
Billy Beane has long coveted Lastings Milledge, and Aaron Heilman could be included in a deal to get Haren as well.
Haren and Johan Santana each had 15 wins this past year. Haren (76) allowed fewer earned runs than Santana (81) as he posted the third best ERA in the AL at 3.07. Santana was seventh (3.33). Haren surrendered 24 home runs while Santana gave up 33.
I’d be shocked if Beane made Haren available, he’s discussed Rich Harden with the Mets before but Haren has been pretty much untouchable. If he was available, I would have to think the Mets would have lots of competition for his services and there are teams who have more chips than the Mets to go get him. This seems like a pipe dream to me.
Sphere: Related Contentvia his blog, the New York Daily News' Adam Rubin reports that Duaner Sanchez is heading for a second surgery on his surgically repaired right shoulder.
Yikes! This is certainly a tough blow for Sanchez, but this is why Omar stockpiles arms. Aaron Heilman did a fine job last year and if Guillermo Mota returns to form after his suspension, there are no worries.
All hands on deck!
Sphere: Related ContentMarty Noble over at mets.com is reporting that Smith and Sele will both be joining Chan Ho Park in the bullpen on the 25 man roster. The rest of the bullpen would then consist of Wagner, Heilman, The Show, and Feliciano.
While the article claims that nothing is set in stone, the fact that its appearing on the official team page as news, one would assume that barring any major problems or injuries (or a Sele or Park temper tantrum) thats the bullpen. This at least answers some questions, though still no word on if they plan on going with four starters for the first stretch, and if they do if they'll carry an extra arm in the bullpen (perhaps Sosa) or an extra bat on the bench. Speaking of which, while its generally assumed Newhan is getting that last bench spot, still no official word there either.
Regardless, it seems that much like of the readers and posters here, the Mets brass believes Burgos needs more time in AAA.
According to the Newark-Star Ledger, the Mets have had discussions with the Blue Jays about a deal that would send OF Vernon Wells to the Mets.
Any deal involving Wells would have to include Aaron Heilman, Lastings Milledge and either Mike Pelfrey or Phil Humber.
I know I'm in the minorty here, but with the way our bullpen is right now, I cannot trade Heilman. I know we won't be able to get any deals done if he isn't part of it, but you cannot expect Ambiorix Burgos and his 12 blown saves to replace Heilman in any capacity.
Sphere: Related ContentThe folks at Newsday have learned that the Mets organization is souring on OF Lastings Milledge by the day and it seems more and more likely he will be traded this winter. Besides his lackluster play, his attitude has also turned off some members of the organization.
Also on the Milledge front, it appears that the Mets have had internal discussions about trading Milledge and P Aaron Heilman to Toronto in exchange for OF Vernon Wells. If the Mets are to acquire Wells, he would be moved to right field while Shawn Green would move to left.
Milledge has also been brought up in discussions involving White Sox Pitchers Javier Vazquez and Freddy Garcia, Marlins P Dontrelle Willis and Padres P Jake Peavy.

The Chicago Tribune reports…
Hendry will try to bring in one or two front-line starters through free
agency or via the Japanese market, but sources indicate the Cubs also
may get involved in trade talks with the New York Mets in hopes of
acquiring right-hander Aaron Heilman.
If the Cubs
nab Heilman, he would be given a chance to earn the fifth starter's
spot in spring training, along with veteran Wade Miller, whom the Cubs
hope to re-sign. Mark Prior's uncertain status will force the Cubs to
go to spring training with a surplus of starting pitching candidates.
Hat tip to Randy W for the tip.

Heilman has reiterated his desire to start to management already, the person said.
Paul LoDuca on his WFAN spot, when asked about Delgado's
struggles, said that his hand is bothering him but won't say
anything about it.
In a Journal News report yesterday, they chronicled Delgado's bumps and bruises.
Regarding the stuff in the papers about him, Paul said
On the gambling allegations. He said its strictly on horses. Sometimes its guilt by association when it comes to this stuff. He said there are no loansharks looking for him, he chuckled and then continued saying there are no people looking for him off the field.
When asked if someone is out to get him, he said you never know. Its too hard to comment, to wonder what if.
On his focus and excellent play despite all the attention in the papers. He gave credit to Rick Down, the Mets hitting coach. He worked with him in LA. everyday working in the cage. He's trying to stay in on the ball, go the other way with it. He said he's lucky to be in this lineup. He's getting good pitches to hit.
On the past two games, we just got beat up the past two days, hopefully we can come back tonight.
On Pedro's start he said it was just one of those innings. He went out to talk to Pedro. When he threw that first fastball 88 mph he knew something wasnt right. We booted a couple of balls. We needed to be mentally stronger. He said its a tough ballpark. If you walk guys its gonna turn into 6-7 innings. Hopefully (Pedro's injury) is nothing serious. He thought during the game, we have a 15-14 game lead, we dont need him right now. I wanted him to get off that mound.
On last nights game, it was one of those nights, El Duque struggled with his breaking ball, it hung in. He said they're running into a hot team right now hitting wise. He said the Mets are gonna have our work cut out for us the next couple of days. He said they really didnt play good in Washington and they need to pick it up. “We're in a lull right now.”
On Milledge he said he's gonna be fine. He said this park is weird, you dont know if its shallow or deep. Beningo made a remark saying it wouldnt hurt to have Milledge catch a ball and Lo Duca said
Paul said Lastings has been a little bit tentative, he has a reputation to be a good fielder. He's the youngest playing in the National League.
On the Phillies, he we want to win at least one of these game.

“Hopefully, there's always going to be talk because that means you're wanted around the league,” Heilman said. “But I try not to really put too much into it until I hear something definite. I try not to read into it too much.”
“It's one of those things that, until you get to 10-and-5 [veto power
over trades], I don't think you're ever fully comfortable with where
you're at,” Heilman said. “Until that point, you're always - I don't
want to say pins and needles - but you never know. You have to be
pretty flexible with what's going to happen and where you're going to
be.”
Heilman, as we've heard time and again, still wants to start…
Adam Rubin gives us a countdown to when David Wright and Jose Reyes become very wealthy young men…
In New York, with Wright and Reyes particularly, there's no danger
of them leaving that first year they're free agents. It just may cost
more money.
There are some exceptions, but free agency comes after six full
years of major-league service time. After this year, here are the
service time totals. (After three full years you're eligible for
arbitration, with some exceptions.)
Reyes: 3 years, 111 days …. so he'll be arbitration
eligible for the first time this winter, and not eligible for free
agency until after the 2009 season.
Wright: 2 years, 75 days … not arbitration eligible until after '07 and not a free agent until after '10.
Sanchez: 3 years, 75 days … arbitration eligible for the first time this winter, and a free agent after '09 season.
Heilman: 2 years, 123 days … same as Wright … not arbitration eligible until after '07, and not a free agent until after '10.

Buster Olney thinks the Mets will aquire Lopez, as he mentions in his ESPN chat today…
Buster Olney: (2:12 PM ET )
Alon: My educated guess is that sometime between now and Friday, the
Mets will make a deal for Rodrigo Lopez of the Orioles. And I think
they'll check in on the cost of Barry Zito (probably Aaron Heilman and
another prospect not named Milledge or Pelfrey) soon.
He later adds what he think it will cost…
Buster Olney: (2:20 PM ET ) Neal: Agree with you, can't be much in return for Rodrigo Lopez. Just one Grade B or B-minus prospect, maybe a Grade C flier.
Steve Phillips agreed that Rodrigo is a good fit for the Mets in his ESPN chat.
Steve Phillips: (3:23 PM ET )
I don't think it has any attachment to Zito. It's possible that Lopez
could be a Met. It fits in their profile. He's a back end of the
rotation guy that could log some innings and help them out. The move to
the National League could be good for him.
Rodrigo Lopez threw 5 2/3 shutout innings on Sunday and has improved from 1-7 to 6-10
