Regardless of the current weather, it seems the Mets (21-19) will attempt to get tonight’s game in. They will take on the Yankees (20-23) in the final game of the series (no make up date has been announced for Friday’s rain out). The Mets will send Oliver Perez (3-3, 4.61) to the mound to face off against Chien-Ming Wang (6-1, 2.90).

For those of you in Manhattan, in case you haven’t noticed, the Empire State Building has been lit up for the past two nights with Mets orange and blue on the east and west sides and Yankees blue and white. While I am not sure how Friday’s rain out will affect this, the plan is that the team who wins the series will have the whole building lit up in their colors. This means that if the Mets win tonight, they will have won the series and the Empire State Building will gleam orange and blue. However, should the Mets lose, the colors will either stay as they are tomorrow or be removed completely.
Tonights game is slated for a 8:05pm start and can be seen on ESPN and heard on WFAN. As always, join us in the Hot Foot Bleachers to discuss how thankful we are that Beaton has lucky tube socks rather than a golden thong and to mercilessly make fun of Joe Morgan and Jon Miller.
In a MUCH needed win, the Mets took game one from the Yankees today at Yankee Stadium with a final score of 7-4. Johan Santana takes his 4th straight win, going into the 8th inning, giving up four runs, three of which were home runs, and striking out five. Andy Pettitte will take the loss, going six innings through which he gave up 3 runs and struck out seven.
The Yankees took an early 2-0 lead off a two-run homer in the bottom of the first by Derek Jeter. The score remained at 2-0 until the top of the 4th when Pettitte gave the Mets their chance to rally. The Mets took the advantage by scoring three runs to take the lead. The Mets regained that lead, and even added to it with the help of Reyes and Wright who hit a solo home run, and a two-run homer, respectively.
Once again, Ryan Church was on fire in all aspects today, as was Brian Schneider, who made an incredible out at the plate, covering home as Johnny Damon tried to score. The throw came from the golden arm of Church, hitting the cut off man perfectly.
Closing it out, Billy Wagner pulled out his first 4 out save of the year. This was his first attempt at a 4 out save since his disastrous 8th inning appearance last august against Philly.
The Mets needed this win. It couldn’t care less who they were playing, they needed this game. Tomorrow is going to be a rough match-up (Perez vs Wang), and they needed to know that when Santana come up, he will stop the streaks. Today seemed to be a morale booster for the players and fans alike. I will admit, it was extra sweet to win it against the Yankees, and to win it because we really tried.
Also, there still has not been a make-up date announced for yesterdays rain out. It is believed the Mets and Yankees will play a two stadium double header when the Yanks come out to Shea in June.
The Mets took another loss today, losing 3 out of 4 to the Nationals. Pelfrey pitched a GEM of a game, flirting with having the first no-no in the Mets franchise, going into the 7th inning without a hit. In the top of the 8th, Big Pelf gave up a hit to Lopez which drove in Flores for the only run of the game, giving him the loss for today’s game. Matt Wise pitched the rest of the game, however the Nationals defense was on top of it and Mets were unable to tie it up in time.
I, for one, would like to know what radioactive spider bit the Nats. To be fair to the Mets, had we already won the series, this would have been considered a good game. Pelfrey pitched amazing and we only lost by one run. On the flip side, however, Bergmann’s ERA coming into today was 11.86…and during the game he walked only two batters while striking out nine. My point being, while this was a good game, it should have been an easy game. When your pitchers are handing you games, don’t throw it away.
Sigh….and the Subway Series begins tomorrow. Johan Santana will face off against Darrell Rasner in the Bronx. This may be the ONLY time you hear me say this…but I agree with Joe Beningo. I hate inter-league play.
The Mets (20-18) are looking to split this four game series with the last place Nationals (17-24) today at Shea. Game time is 1:10pm and can be seen on SNY and heard on WFAN. Mike Pelfrey (2-3, 4.86) will toe the mound against Jason Bergmann (0-1, 11.68).

Over at Screwballs blog for Fox Sports, Jose Reyes learned a new move called the “Screwball Shake”.
I, for one, am REALLY glad Reyes is getting back to his old self. Some people need to stay serious, but that won’t work for him. I agree with everyone that as long as he keeps it in the dugout, there should be no problems.
