It was Friday night when I went to see a formerly little known movie that started to ride a bit of a hype machine to box office significance. It was Paranormal Activity, and it was good. The scares were not cheap in the least, and it features a final act that will give you the chills. And it’s true: I couldn’t sleep that night. Did it have anything to do with this supernatural thriller, though? ‘Course not.
It was the likely match-up of the Phillies and Yankees in the World Series that kept me tossing and turning.
The Phillies had days earlier clinched their spot in the Fall Classic, sending Torre and company to the golf course, but the Yankees had yet to punch their ticket. Despite that, did any of us Mets fans have even the tiniest bit of doubt that the nightmare that 2009 was would end in any other fashion than a Yanks/Phils World Series? Of course not!
It was a year during which the Mets were rumored to have lost a large amount of money with Bernie Madoff.
It was a year during which the general manager called out a reporter in the most humiliating way possible.
It was a year during which a new ballpark opened that more people criticized than embraced.
Most importantly, it was a year during which the Mets have left as many men on base as they have in the infirmary.
“Choke artists?” Hardly. They never even got that chance.
And now, the Yankees have gone ahead and finished the Angels (who I picked to win it all, by the way) off in 6 games, and the only World Series that I would’ve hated to see is the one we’re going to have. The Yankees are one of the premiere teams in all of sports, and one that the Mets happen to share a town with. The Phillies are the team that mocked the Mets during the season, offseason, and even during their 2008 World Series celebration. Since there’s no such rule that would have both of them lose, causing the championship to be awarded to nobody, I’m going to root for the next best thing.
I’m going with the Yankees to beat the Phillies.
Alright, I can already see the angry mob holding pitchforks and torches from my window, so I’ll try and explain this as plainly and quickly as I could. I hate the Phillies, and I can’t stand their fans. Yes, more so than the Yankees and their fans. The Phils have taken the NL East 2 years in a row, and I’m tired of watching Victorino, Utley, and Rollins celebrate, all while knowing that more smack talk against the Mets is upcoming. You can say that we’d hear Yankees fans talk more smack than we ever could from the Phillies, especially since we have to be around them all the time. If you ask me though, they’re easy to tune out, especially since I’ve gotten used to it over all these years.
Believe me, I’m not exactly excited to watch the Yankees parade down the Canyon of Heroes. As a matter of fact, I’d try to avoid as much of the coverage of any of the celebration as possible. To me, however, they’re the lesser evil, and the last thing Mets fans need is a second straight Phillies World Series win.
So how about you guys? Who would you prefer win this, the World Series from Hell? Sound off!
