The Mets need to address several glaring holes this offseason. Among them include power, a leftfielder, and several starting pitchers. With that being said, here is what I suggest Omar must do this offseason. I also tried to limit the budget as best I could.
The Mets MUST sign either Jason Bay or Matt Holliday to man Left field next season. Both players will be costly, but with Carlos Delgado’s salary coming off the books, and Jeff Wilpon’s saying that the payroll will have no limitations this year, who cares? Daniel Murphy showed me enough in the second half to be the everyday 1st basemen, but this will only work if the Mets acquire some pop to makeup for Murphy’s lack of the longball. I would prefer Bay, but I think he has a better chance of staying with Boston than Holliday does with St. Louis…
The Mets MUST sign John Lackey. Lackey is the cream of the crop of this year’s starting pitching market. Lackey will most likely cost 15m a year, but with the Mets questions marks in the rotation it has to be done. I cannot count on Oliver Perez, or John Maine next season, meaning the Mets will need at least two starting pitchers. Either of the aforementioned pitchers would be good #5 options, but cannot be counted on as #3 and #4 behind Johan and Pelf.
The Mets SHOULD sign Randy Wolf to a deal similiar to what they gave Oliver Perez last season. Wolf was a horse this year, and has been the Dodgers most valuable starting pitcher. Wolf was signed as an afterthought, but it turned out to be a big win for Ned Colleti and company. Plugging in Wolf behind Santana, Pelfrey, and Lackey would be a fine rotation.
So there it is, my wish list for 2009. Left field and starting pitcher are obviously the most important holes to fill, and should be addressed early before Minaya attempts to fix the other holes on this team.
