According to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post, changes are in store for the Mets uniforms next season:
The Mets are considering a couple of significant alterations to their home uniforms in 2010, according to team officials. The club has talked about abandoning the pinstripes that have been part of their home uniform since the franchise began in 1962, as well as switching to a cream-colored outfit at Citi Field instead of basic white.
The cream uniforms would be similar to the throwbacks they were in August, as well as the current home outfits of the San Francisco Giants.
Club spokesman Jay Horwitz would not be specific today except to say the Mets ”are going to do something” with their home uniforms next season.
Now, my two cents.
The first thing Jay Horowitz and the Mets Department of Really Awful
Decisions (see the Citi Field Patch) should do, is getting rid of the black uniforms. They are ugly, depressing, and trite – just generally no good. Too many people buy the black jerseys and t-shirts, only to create a really ugly, depressing and trite looking crowd at games. It’s boring. Remember the SI cover that read ”Best Infield Ever?” - I’d probably have that hanging on my wall if they weren’t wearing those wretched black rags.
As Matt Cerrone suggested at Mets Blog, maybe all Mets fans could try wearing blue to games. Honestly, I don’t care as long as every fan is wearing some variety of blue or orange – just not black.
Next order of business, getting rid of the pin stripes? Boo! The pinstripes are classy, and nothing really looks better to me than a Sunday 1pm game when the Mets run out onto the field with blue hats, pinstripes and high socks.
A clever idea, brought along by my brother Greg: why not go a li
ttle retro and bring back the unis from ‘86 ? Beyond the cool look, maybe wearing those unis could remind them what it feels like to wear the jersey of a champion. I would love seeing David Wright and Jose Reyes trot out there with the stripes on their shoulders, it just looks great.
Other ideas? It was great last year when they wore the blue hats with the road grays; they should try that more often. If I recall correctly, the Mets won 15-6 against the Yankees with those uniforms. Also, how about uniforms without the names on the back? The Yankees do it, and as much as I love to hate them, I don’t really think anything says team more than having just a number on the back.
Theoretically, all this speculating could just end up meaning that if (when) the Mets go down in flames next year, they will at least go down looking fly.
