ESPN is reporting that IF Mark DeRosa has been dealt to the Cardinals in exchange for RP Chris Perez and a player to be named later.

Perez,  regarded as the closer of the future for the Cardinals, had a 4.18 ERA and a 1.35 ERA for the Cards in 2009.

DeRosa, a super utility man who has played for the Braves and Cubs during his career, was batting .270 with 13 homers and 50 RBI for the Tribe.

OK. I’m just going to say it. Omar will, and SHOULD take some serious heat for missing out on DeRosa. Chris Perez? He is that relief pitcher we touched up for two runs in no innings on Wednesday. Omar certainly missed the boat on this one. Very, very depressing.

Parnell is the only comparable player we have to Perez, and Perez actually has a better track record in the bigs - though not a great deal more. Would you have given Parnell up for DeRosa? I don't think the Mets should do that. And you really can't evaluate things until the PTNL is named - it could be someone substantial.
  • I remember talking about this on my forum.

Great website, I look forward to reading it some more.

Indians GM Mark Shapiro is very shrewd in evaluating talent & I have a feeling he coveted Perez in comparison to what the Mets could afford. Like tar-hc said, would Mets fans be willing to give up Parnell, not to mention a player to be named later as well? Which, I bet is a big key to this deal considering, "the PTBN component is an important one" according Shapiro. The PTBN is probably another very good prospect & while the Mets seem to be stockpiling talent at AA & in the Florida State League, I would have been wary to give up two good young pieces for a guy who, IMO, may have already played his best baseball during the first 3 months of the season.
