Here are the Top Foot Awards for the Mets’ frustrating 5 to 4 loss to the Marlins.

In the spirit of Easter weekend…

Peter Cottontail’s Easter Egg Award:

  • Although many would put last night’s loss on the bullpen (more on that later), the real problem was the lack of the big hit. The Mets amassed a small army on the bases last night and except for a clutch, two out hit in the top of the ninth by Jeremy Reed the Mets struggled mightily with runners in scoring position. Before Reed’s hit, the Mets were 0 for 10 with RISP and finished the game 1 for 12 leaving 14 men on base. So far to date the Mets are 7 for 40 in RBI situations, which is good enough for a stellar .175 average. If I can think of one think that needs to be fixed ASAP it is our situational hitting. Without it we are nothing but an average, non-playoff team, which is something I refuse to accept.

Eddie Kendricks’ “Keep on Truckin” Award:

  • On a positive note, both Daniel Murphy and Ryan Church continued the hot start to their respective seasons. Church was 3 for 4 with walk and Murphy was 3 for 5 with a run. Its too bad that we couldn’t bend the rules so that every time a runner got to second base, Church or Murphy would automatically hit. If this were the case we would have won the game by at least 5 runs. Keep it up guys!

Capt. Steven Hiller’s “Welcome to Earth!” Award:

  • Even though we hoped that we could avoid it, the bullpen struggled to keep the Marlins at bay after John Maine exited the game at the end of the fifth. Sean Green, Bobby Parnell, J.J. Putz, Pedro Feliciano, and Darren O’Day allowed 3 runs on 9 hits with O’Day giving up the game winning single to Jorge Cantu. Although loss cannot be put on them, it’s frustrating to see the bullpen continue to give up runs in a tight game, especially to a division rival. However, when your offense is non-existent there is essentially no margin for error and unfortunately the bullpen fell victim to that.
