David Lennon on his blog for Newsday reveals that new Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez wore blood-red contact lenses for today’s bullpen session, his first of the spring, instead of his trademark goggles.

Lennon said the color of the contacts were “a deep scarlet, giving his eyes the reddish hue of a vampire.” K-Rod said that the contacts “helps with the glare.”

This is not the first time a player has used contact lenses to give himself an edge by enhancing his vision. Brian Roberts wore contact lenses a few years ago that were outlined in red, which he said were so sharp that he could see the stitching on the ball as it was thrown towards the plate. He said the improvement made it seem like he was seeing in HD.
