Jack Curry of the New York Times is reporting that the Mets have offered Derek Lowe a three year deal worth about $36 million. Scott Boras, Lowe’s agent, is reportedly seeking a 5 year deal worth $90 million for the 36 year old starter.
While the negotiations are likely preliminary, it should be interesting to see whether the market will allow Lowe to get anywhere near the big money he is seeking. I sincerely doubt any team would give a 36 year old starter a 5 year deal so I wouldn’t worry about the Mets being priced out of these negotiations. The Red Sox and Phillies are also interested in Lowe but it remains to be seen whether these organizations would give Lowe a more lucrative offer.
Curry noted that just a month ago Ryan Dempster received a four year, $52 million contract from the Cubs. But the market for starters may have changed in the past month and whoever lands Lowe or Perez may be the benefactors of bargains made possible by waiting out the market. Since the Yankees are not involved, the Mets’ competition for Lowe’s services (Red Sox and Phillies), are unlikely to drive the price too high. I would imagine the Mets will get Lowe with a vesting option for a fourth year even though the Mets are reportedly reluctant to go more than 3 years.
One thing has become clear: The Mets prefer Lowe over the younger Perez. Since the Mets probably know Perez better than any other organization, I am inclined to trust Omar’s judgment on this one. I would gladly welcome Lowe’s nasty sinker, big game experience (3.34 Playoff ERA) and 3.75 career ERA.
