The reports that the Mets offered Francisco Rodriguez a two year deal with an option for a third year are likely true because now K-Rod’s agent Paul Kinzer says his client may be willing to get creative. The Mets seem to be using the bad economy to their advantage and K-Rod’s reps might be willing to work with them. NY Post’s Joel Sherman is reporting:

Kinzer told The Post he will seek to be “creative” in trying to formulate a contract structure in negotiations with the New York Mets and other clubs. “The team’s job is to protect themselves in a down cycle,” Kinzer said. “My job is to protect my client if the economy comes back up.”

Kinzer conceded he was disappointed his client’s 62 saves now likely will not be fully rewarded financially. Kinzer began the offseason floating the idea of a closer-record, five-year, $75 million contract. “Obviously it is a different world we are all living in,” he said. “Just turn on the TV. It’s a different world than six months ago. The markets have changed for teams. We just don’t know what degree to yet. This is what we have to figure out. That is where creativity comes in.”

If this is so than nothing should stand in the way of the Mets getting a deal done. Go get him Omar.

Update: 8:00 – According to ESPN’s Jayson Stark the Mets just finished up their meeting with Brian Fuentes. Stark also writes that the Mets:

…have not made a formal offer to Francisco Rodriguez, but they did discuss “concepts.” They don’t currently have any plans to meet with Kerry Wood, who is not in Las Vegas for the winter meetings.
