The Newark Star Ledger’s Dan Graziano is reporting that the Tigers have acquired Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson, to replace Edgar Renteria who signed on with the Giants yesterday.

Wilson, 30, hit .272 with one homer and 22 RBI in 305 ABs for the Pirates in 2008.

Wilson is a serviceable shortstop, but my thinking behind this move is to improve the defense, as Wilson is an excellent defensive shortstop.

Update 3:15: According to MLB’s Hot Stove Blog Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski has denied the Star Ledger’s report:

“It is not accurate,” Dombrowski said. “I can 100 percent tell you that.”
