CBSSports is reporting that a Braves-Padres deal that would send ace Jake Peavy to the Braves is “near completion” and the Padres are expected to ask Peavy to “waive his no trade clause so the deal can be completed”. The package could include SS Yunel Escobar, OF prospect Gorkys Hernandez, and two pitching prospects.

Peavy, 27, went 10-11 with a 2.84 for a poor Padres team in 2008, after going 19-6 with a 2.54 ERA in 2007.

Ugh, I’ve enjoyed the Braves becoming the laugh of the NL East the last few years, but acquiring Peavy and improving the bullpen could instantly put them back into the hunt for the NL East.

FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the stories circulating about a Jake Peavy trade to the Braves are: “Totally inaccurate,”:

A Padres source with knowledge of the discussions told FOXSports.com on Thursday. “We are not close with anyone at this time.”

Rosenthal is also reporting that the Cubs may have interest in acquiring Peavy.
