I don’t remember the last time we discussed a position ad nauseum while the Mets had someone locked up at that position for 3 years for good money.  Then again,  2B Luis Castillo isn’t exactly swimming in Christmas party invitations

Jon Heyman reports for SI.com that the New York Yankees are exploring the signing of 2B Orlando Hudson, even possibly to play him in center field.

Center field?  What?  Anyway…my initial reaction to reading this story was to say that the Mets should step up their efforts to get O-Dog, if there were any efforts to speak of, that is.  From all accounts he’s a great clubhouse guy, while also playing an excellent second base.  But not so fast…

It was just made public at FoxSports.com and relayed by Metsblog.com that David Eckstein is ready and willing to play second base next season.

This is an interesting tidbit, especially since Eckstein was the guy I wanted to get before the Mets even signed Castillo.  If the Mets failed to get Hudson and decided that Castillo isn’t the way to go, then Eck is exactly the type of player the Mets should be happy to have.  Incredibly annoying to the opposition, his gritty style would be more than welcome at Citi Field.

Of course, Omar Minaya and the Mets can and very well may decide to stick with Castillo, but they all better expect some healthy boos everytime his name’s announced until he figures out a way to turn it on.
