There’s something about that Shane Victorino that I just can’t stand. For one, he’s a Philly. Maybe it’s also the way he carries himself. Maybe it’s his bad attitude. Maybe it’s his feistiness, his hard-nosed style of playing the game or just his clutch. But most of all, I think it’s because nobody in the Mets’ roster fits that mold. If we’d only have someone who’d continually bang into walls (don’t get any ideas, Ryan Church), who’d bark at the pitcher while pointing to his head and/or body when thrown at…
Bottom line is, we need some fire in our team. Someone who the opposing team just doesn’t want to mess with. I realize these aren’t the type of things that generally constitute great players (See Garcia, Karim), but over the past few years we’ve become way too complacent, always preferring to sulk rather than fight back. This fact is obvious if you look at our come-from-behind wins in 2008. The Phillies were one of the top teams in the league, the Mets were horrific. Let’s hope for a turnaround next year; let’s hope for a team that won’t settle.

Funny you should post that picture with this post, because the guy who had all the fire for the 2006 Mets team is getting bowled over. It’s none other than our Captain Red Ass, Paul LoDuca.
I still believe that getting rid of LoDuca was what completely deflated this team. Between him in D.C and Wags on the sidelines, we were fireless.
There’s never been a guy that I hated more while simultaneously wishing someone on the Mets was like him.
See the homerun last night, on that curve? That’s the definition of clutch.
Loduca had a productive 2006, but from 2007-2008 he was pretty awful. Yes, he brings fire, intensity, blah-blah-blah but he also brought OPS+’s of 80 and 64 those 2 seasons. Also, he was on the team in 2007, which deflated rather poorly.
It’s a legitimate suggestion that without steroids LoDuca wouldn’t have even been a major leaguer. But that’s a different topic.
Missing guy and a good fit for the Mets would be Eric Byrnes from Arizona…Trade Aaron and Castillo
I’ve actually met Eric Byrnes, he was here (Dominican Republic) a few years ago playing winter ball..Real “Hustle” guy on the field, and pretty cool dude off it. I agree he’d be a nice fit, only we’d have to let one of our 18 outfielders go..(Chavez, Pagan, Tatis, etc.).
