Now, i don’t run the Mets, and many might say it’s a good thing that I don’t run the Mets. My opinion is that it’s not our money, and we the Wilpons should spend their money to improve this team. Like our colleague Gary Grund, I am all for homegrown guys. If Daniel Murphy can prove he can play 2nd base this winter that’d be terrific, but if not I’d entertain signing the “O-Dog”. We need help at SP, LF, and in the bullpen, so here is my wish list for 2009
To-Do List:
- Sign CC Sabathia to a 6 year 130m contract: Call me crazy, but I’d love to see a Santana-Sabathia two headed monster at the top of the rotation. Giving us Sabathia, Santana, Maine, and Pelfrey for the next five years would be awesome, and give us a chance to win which is all I ask for year in and out.
- Sign Manny Ramirez to a 4 year 60m contract: Yeah, Manny is out of his mind if he thinks he is going to get 5 yrs 100m at the age of 37. I will take my chances with Manny for the next 4 years, as he showed he is still one of the top players in the league while hitting .400 in two months with the Dodgers.
- Sign Relievers Will Ohman Damaso Marte and Dan Wheeler to 3 yr 12m contracts: The stats speak for themselves, these are quality relievers who can actually get guys out. Sign them up for my team!
- Sign RP Guillermo Mota: I kid, I kid.
- Sign 1B/PH Daryle Ward to a 2 yr 8m contract: Ward would give us the power bat off the bench we sorely needed this year.
Things Not To Do:
- Sign Francisco Rodriguez: Please, if we give this guy 80m to pitch one inning I will be livid. If anyone saw KRod pitch this year, he didn’t have his “lights out” stuff. KRod’s fastball topped out at 93 mph for the most part, and his slider flattened out after the first half of the year. He had guys on almost every inning, and every game was a tightrope. I think we saw enough of that this year. Pass.
- Resign Oliver Perez: Please, I know Perez was unhittable from late June to early August, but his last six starts were not good, as he posted an ERA over five. This is not someone I want to shell out 75m for. Pass.
There it is, ladies and gents. Now take it in, and write your opinions in the comments section.

Not bad. I’d drop Marte and Ohman in favor of Jeremy Affeldt - take a look at him.
Ward for 2 years, $8 mil? I think you mean 2 years, $4 mil maybe. $4 million seems like a lot to pay a bench player who OPS’d .721 in 2008. He did have strong years in ‘06 and ‘07 though.
Lastly, I feel like Manny would get more than $15 million per from about 6 other teams.
Lol at paying Ward all that money. Hahah
The Mets have roughly $31 million coming off the payroll with the likes of Oliver Perez, Pedro Martinez, Orlando Hernandez, Moises Alou, among other minor players such as Damion Easley.
Delgado’s $12 million option (down $4 million from 2008) somewhat offsets the raises that are due to Wright, Reyes and Santana.
The Mets will have $10.5 million of dead money in Billy Wagner, who won’t pitch. That will have to come into play into their budget.
What you have there is the Mets basically shelling out $52.6 million in players. I think that with the Yankees involved, Sabathia is going to get a bigger deal than most are expecting (somewhere in the range of 6-years, $140-145 million).
Obviously, the $52.6 that you speak of does not include the up-to-$18 million you will shell out to get rid of Castillo either.
…and if the Mets can’t find a taker for Schoeneweis, that could cost them another $3.6 million against their bullpen.
Wilpon stated that it was too early to tell whether the payroll was going to stay where it is or increase, but based on those numbers, the payroll would increase around $20+ million or so and that is without even heading into the new stadium with a solid closer in the picture.
Like I said in a previous post, what is the purpose of have a huge 1-2 punch like that and good 3-4 in your rotation if there is no one to finish the games? If Wagner was healthy for the 2009 season, I would at least consider it, but at this point, I don’t see how closer is not your top priority this offseason.
Yes, this is a New York franchise, who can afford to spend, but we have to realize that there is still a budget.
We have watched the team across town do pretty much spend and spend on free agents since 2001 and they are still in the same spot now as they were then…without a ring on their finger.
i like spending wilpons money, its fun, you should try it
i like most of what you say, but i am suspicious that Darryl ward is your cousin or something.
