There seems to be lots of the optimism running lately regarding the MLB debut of LHP Jon Niese.  Even Rob today at Hot Foot said, “I have full confidence that Niese will keep us in the game and give us a chance to win today.”

It’s very possible that Niese will keep us in the game and give us a chance to win - as any pitcher could on any given day -, but I think Niese doing it today is far from a foregone conclusion.

This year has been Niese’s only impressive season in his tenure as a professional.  The rest of the time, he has been average at single-A and rookie ball, failing to impress.  Last year he had a 4.29 ERA pitching for the class A Port St. Lucie Mets.

Niese’s hype has also probably been hyped because of all the trade talk he was involved in near the trade deadline.  Unfortunately, he probably has been talked up a bit too much because he happens to be the best pitcher in a Mets minor league system that traded three top pitching prospects to the Twins and has had their best minor leaguer (Mike Pelfrey) graduate to the big club.

Niese also is facing a righty heavy Milwaukee team that is 4th in the MLB in runs scored vs. lefties, 3rd most in HRs vs. lefties and has an .821 OPS against lefties.

While I’m hoping Niese goes out there and puts the Mets in a situation to win, I do not have full confidence in the fact that he should be the replacement for John Maine down the stretch.
