Here is a recent conversation Andrew Beaton and I had on the Carlos Delgado topic, so, making its return to Hot Foot, is HOT HEADS.
Andrew: As an American, I have to say Delgado is a bum
Rob: As an American, I say Delgado is a bum who saved our butts this year
Andrew: It only appears that he’s saving our butts because what he’s been doing is a step up for what he did for the first 2.5 months. If we have had an average player for the entire season who played bad at the beginning our record would be exactly the same
Rob: No, not at all.
Rob: Delgado has single handedly won us a handful of games
Rob: He didn’t exactly “cost” us any games in the beginning of th year
Rob: Because the whole team was in a funk
Andrew: He was terrible at the beginning on a new level and longer than anybody else. He single handedly got Willie Randolph fired
Andrew: Do you think Delgado is the Mets MVP
Rob: Right now, yes.
Andrew: That’s so stupid.
Rob: How can you say he’s not?
Rob: Who the heck do u think the mvp is?
Rob: Wright?
Rob: Mr 220 in the clutch?
Rob: No thanks
Rob: I’ll take Delgado, who actually gets meaningful hits
Andrew: He has had a few dramatic wins lately but with Scott hatteberg at 1st the entire season we’d have a similar record. Delgado single handedly was why we were so dang mediocre to begin the year. Just because he decides to pick it up for a few games lately doesn’t mean squat. Wright has been consistently better and has been with this team the whole entire time. Delgado was a cancer on the team for 2.5 months
Rob: Few games
Rob: What the heck man
Rob: He’s been on fire for 2 months
Rob: Lol
Rob: See
Rob: You were on vacation for all of July
Rob: You did not see how good he was in July
Andrew: I know, but I still saw every box score
Rob: Seriously, he was unconscious
Andrew: I know
Andrew: I know
Rob: I know
Rob: So, how can u not say he’s the Mets MVP?
Rob: it’s all about finishing
Andrew: But 2 months and 2 terrible months. He has been equally good as equally bad as he was then
Rob: The stats speak for themselves
Rob: 270 30 homers 93 RBI
Andrew: Winning a game today counts as much in the W/L column as it did in April
Andrew: its .263 btw, not .270, with a .350 OBP, not particularly good.
Andrew: Snd Wright has a better OBP, more RBI’s.
Andrew: He just hasn’t dazzled as much
Rob: I’d rather have Delgado up than Wright right now
Rob: Wright was 2-11 in the Philly series?
Rob: Popping up and striking out left and right
Rob: I love DWright, but, Delgado is just better right now
Rob: You can’t ignore that
Andrew: Delgado has been better for 1 month
Rob: 2
Rob: And Wright was better for 2
Rob: They are even
Andrew: Everyone keeps on saying RISP stats, but let’s look at Late and Close stats:
Late and close, in 73 at bats Delgado is batting .205,
Late and close, in 73 at bats Wright is batting .299.
In tie games, Wright is batting .299 with 33 RBIs,
In tie games Delgado is batting .222 with 24 RBIs.
Andrew: 1 run games, Delgado is batting .245
Andrew: Wright is .305
Rob: Big hits, Wright has had none
Rob: The 1 against the Pads
Rob: Delgado won us 2 games this year against the freaking Phillies alone
Andrew: Everybody keeps on saying “well, big hits, that makes up for all of Delgado’s statistical deficiencies, attitude issues and the fact that he lost us games for 2 and a half months.” an RBI in the 3rd inning counts as much as one in the 8th. When the final score is tallied, you just have to have more runs than the other team, and it’s not like Wright has only been producing in blowouts, I just showed you stats
Rob: I’ll take Delgado, thank u very much
Andrew: What do you think Wright is batting vs. Philadelphia this year, take a gander
Rob: 300
Andrew: .302
Rob: yeah, so
Andrew: What do you think Delgado Is?
Andrew: Take a gander
Rob: 230
Rob: 220
Andrew: Close .238. So he has 2 big hits and that erases your entire memory?
Rob: Delgado may not have the “stats” but he’s had the big hits
Andrew: 2 big hits shouldn’t wipe away an entire season of failing against the Phillies
Rob: I’ll take Delgado, thank you very much
Hope you enjoyed it.

Stats and box scores only tell you half the story.
Beaton, your wrong. And stop, taking the stupid god bless america thing so personally.
And for someone who criticizes me for using some advanced stats to make my arguments, it makes you look pretty silly when you start to pull up these BS “late and close” stats.
C’mon Beaters, your better than this.
Also, you say that Delgado can’t hit for average? Click the link and scroll to the bottom.

The league average for batting average in baseball, is .263. Delgado is batting… .263.
Right now, I feel pretty confident having either Delgado or Wright in a big situation. They’ve both had their funks at different parts of the season, Delgado had his early on, Wright had his about a month ago.
In the ebb and flow of a season, every player goes through ups and downs, Delgado’s were magnified because he came off a pretty dreadful 2007 and everyone had their forks out to stick in him and his career.
Well Delgado turned it on in a big way. Would you rather his season reversed? Hot as hell in the first two months and cold as ice in August/September. I’ll take the Delgado we have now, thank you very much. We are gonna need him in this close race, thats for sure.
I’m with Vines on the God Bless America thing too. If he wants to do that, let him do it. All i care about is him hitting a baseball 400 ft.
