Ouch. The Phillies scored six runs in the 9th inning off the triumvirate of Duaner Sanchez Joe Smith and Pedro Feliciano to defeat the Mets by a score of 8-6 tonight at Shea. Chad Durbin got the win, and Smith took the loss. Brad Lidge closed it for his 22nd save.
One of my Keys to the Game for tonight was “What If Billy is Unavailable?” Well, it came down to that tonight, and it absolutely blew up in our face.
Johan Santana once again pitched brilliantly, going eight strong innings and allowing only two runs. Santana had thrown 105 pitches but was pulled by Jerry Manuel in favor of Sanchez for the 9th inning without the services of Billy Wagner.
The Mets clobbered two homers tonight, both two run shots off the bats of Carlos Delgado and Ramon Castro.
Joe Blanton went six innings and gave up five runs in his first start as a Phillie.
Endy Chavez was thrown out at home plate twice with no outs in this game.
Chase Utley made a spectacular diving play to end the 7th, saving two runs from scoring.
In the 9th, Jayson Werth, Gregg Dobbs, and Shane Victorino all singled to start the inning off Sanchez. Smith came in and got Carlos Ruiz to hit a chopper to Jose Reyes. Reyes went on to try and tag 2nd base, but the speedy Victorino beat him to the bag and Reyes ended up getting no outs on the play. Feliciano came in and gave up a two run double to famed Met killer So Taguchi. Jimmy Rollins followed it up with a two run double of his own, and in a blink of an eye, the Phillies had taken the lead 7-5.
I’m not even angry, I’m just stunned. You couldn’t make this stuff up.
The Mets try to rebound tomorrow with John Maine on the mound facing Brett Myers.
