Dan Graziano of the Star Ledger reports that the Mets might be interested in the Oakland A’s closer Huston Street.
Graziano notes that the Mets had interest even before Billy Wagner’s shoulder issue came up. Street could set up for Wagner in the same sense as the Jesse Orosco-Roger McDowell lefty/righty closer combo from the 1986 World Series championship team. He could also be an emergency closer if Wagner’s issues prove to be serious. There are reportedly three other teams interested in Street as well.
Graziano writes that the Mets had a scout at last night’s White Sox-Rangers game to watch Texas, possibly with interest in additional bullpen arms.
Graziano also reports that the Mets inquired about Matt Holliday but quickly backed off when the Rockies asked for both Carlos Beltran and Fernando Martinez in return.

Isn’t the point of trading Holliday to get rid of the $23 million owed to him through 2009 and potential huge deal that he will get after next season? Why the hell would they ask for Beltran who is scheduled to make close to $19 million a year through 2011?
To save 4 million dollars, plus the money saved by filling a second outfield position for several years with Fernando Martinez, not to mention getting a Gold Glove center fielder, a huge upgrade over Holliday’s defense.
That being said, I would never trade Beltran and Martinez for Holliday, but if I was the Rockies I sure would.
According to Heyman Colorado is willing to spend that kind of money on a center fielder who can hit for power and cover the kind of ground that Beltran does. So they view Beltran as a more valuable player than Holiday and are willing to spend that type of money on him.
Forget my 4 million dollars comment, I misread Gary’s post.
The Rockies lose money in the first two years, but Holliday is going to make as much if not more than Beltran after that.
Also factoring in they fill another outfield position for practically nothing with a top prospect.
