The New York Mets defeated the San Francisco Giants 7-0 at Shea Stadium tonight.

Two words can describe Mike Pelfrey’s performance. Absolutely dominant. After getting out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning, that started with a Damion Easley error, Pelfrey allowed just two more hits over the next six innings, finishing with a line of seven innings pitched, three hits, no earned runs and five strikeouts. Pelfrey started out the season 2-6, but has now won his last five starts and the Mets have won seven of his last eight starts. His ERA is now under the 4.00 mark for the first time since April 20th and currently stands at 3.93.

Carlos Beltran hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first with both Endy Chavez and David Wright on base. Carlos Delgado followed up with a solo shot in the sixth that was simply crushed. Beltran came back with a two-out RBI single in the 7th. Easley followed Beltran with another two-out RBI single, making the score 6-0. Fernando Tatis tacked on another run with a solo shot over the center field wall in the 8th.

In addition, Argenis Reyes got his first hit of his major league career in the 7th inning off of Jack Taschner.

On the other end, San Francisco Giants starter Tim Lincecum, who was 10–1, with a league-leading 122 strikeouts ERA at 2.49, was hit up for four runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings.

Overall great game by the Mets on both ends. The Mets are now 13-10 under Jerry Manuel. With the Phillies 2-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals tonight, the Mets win puts them just 1 game out in the loss column.
