Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News is reporting that ex-Cincinnati GM Wayne Krivsky has been hired as a major league scout for the Mets.  Krivsky and Omar Minaya worked together back in the day for the Texas Rangers.

Krivsky has not always made the best free agent signings, such as signing Alex Gonzalez to a three year $14 million dollar deal, but he’s always been able to acquire high talent cheaply through trades.

Notable trades include:

  • Acquired Bronson Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena
  • Acquired Scott Schoenweis for a player to be named later
  • Acquired Jeff Keppinger for Russ Haltiwanger
  • Acquired Josh Hamilton for cash
  • Acquired Edison Volquez for Josh Hamilton

Hat tip to Mets Blog for the Krivsky signing link.

From what I can tell, Krivsky has been very crafty in the trade market though he’s made some mistakes through free agency.  I think that’s good skill set, with more and more of the game moving towards trades with team’s locking up their young talent so early.

What’s funny is my friend told me a couple weeks ago, “Hey, enough with Omar, Wayne Krivksky was fired – lets go and get him to be our GM.”  He wasn’t kidding either…
