Had the Mets fired Willie Randolph several weeks ago, the hit they are taking now could have been avoided. The fans were generally in the camp that it was time for the Mets to move on. I was in the minority among those who felt Randolph wasn’t responsible for the poor play of the team, and that the players simply were not playing up to their abilities, and Omar Minaya’s flaws had finally began to show themselves in the form of aging over the hill players who either had gone past their prime or simply were not physically able to play at all.

Instead the Mets practically put themselves in the worst position possible, as if they decided to take all the support they had in firing Randolph and turn it against them. Allowing Randolph to be raked over the coals for several weeks by the press, and then put him on a cross country plane, the same plane they put a concussed Ryan Church, only to give him the axe after hours, unable to be man enough to do the deed in the light of day.

There is much more here than meets the eye, and I for one am ashamed to be a Mets fan because of how this situation unfolded. I would have been upset that Willie Randolph was fired, but that pales in comparison to how stupid I feel right now for supporting an organization that can always find a way to make a complete fool of themselves.
