New Orleans Zephyrs outfielder Chris Aguila has been called up to replace Abraham Nunez on the 25-man roster, reported Adam Rubin at his blog for the New York Daily News. Nunez was designated for assignment late on Tuesday.

Aguila is hitting .308 with 17 HR and 40 RBI this season in Triple-A New Orleans. He has a .384 OBP. This season, Aguila is absolutely destroying lefties at a .353 clip in 68 at-bats. He has a .288 average against right-handed pitchers in 153 at-bats.

The 29-year-old outfielder was a third-round pick for the Florida Marlins in the 1997 draft. He saw action with a combined 218 at-bats in 141 games with the Marlins in 2004-2006. In those years, he split time between the big league club and Triple-A Albuquerque. He played for the Pirates’ Triple-A Indianapolis affiliate in 2007.

This is the much-awaited experimentation from Omar Minaya. I’m a bit stunned that it even came, as I figured Jose Valentin would get the call-up to replace Nunez. It’ll be interesting to see how much of an opportunity he gets, considering Moises Alou and Marlon Anderson are back and Tatis remains with the team. Nick Evans got an opportunity, but that was with both Alou and Anderson gone.
