So, here we are again. A week ago today Willie Randolph met with Mets brass, and was not sure if he would still have his job at the end of it. A week later, here are the Mets going 5-2 and looking rather impressive doing it. What’s been the difference in this team over the last week?
- Two out hits
The Mets have delivered on many occasions this week, most of it with two outs. Last Night for example: Had David Wright not driven a groundball past Blake DeWitt in the third inning, Carlos Beltran and Ryan Church’s home runs do not happen. In other words, I was getting very frustrated because it seemed this team could not hit a lick when there were 2 outs in an inning. They have proved me wrong.
- Getting Production From the Bench
You can’t say much more about the bench. It’s been great this week, giving the team two of its five wins this week. Endy Chavez drove a home run of Marlins closer Kevin Gregg to tie the game in the ninth inning on Wednesday. Fernando Tatis, filling in for an injured Moises Alou, had TWO game winning hits this week. They were both against pretty good relievers as well. First, he drove a Justin Miller pitch into the left field corner and scored two to win it. Second, on Saturday, against the Dodgers Jon Broxton, he drove a single up the middle to put the Mets up one.
- They Want Willie
And yes, the obvious answer. They want Willie as manager. The players realized that Willie has been receiving unfair criticism because they’ve been playing like garbage and to keep his job they would have to play alot better. Well, they have responded with a bang, receiving great outings from pitchers, most notably Mike Pelfrey and Johan Santana over the weekend.
This team is playing good baseball right now, enjoy it.
