John Delcos, on his blog for the Journal News lists the reasons why the Mets are in this mess, and it’s not because of Willie Randolph.
There are a lot of problems here, and the biggest one is how the team was constructed, and that’s not on Randolph.
Delcos puts it in clear terms for anyone willing to listen. Omar Minaya bears more blame here than Randolph. Unfortunately most are too frustrated at the state of this team and Willie is an easy scapegoat for the real problems with the Mets.
I hope the Mets can still do something to address the real issues holding this team back.

Willie may not be the root of the problem, but he’s not helping matters either. Delcos is right — this is a poorly constructed team — all the more reason why the Mets require a strong/dynamic manager to get this team to play better than the sum of its parts. Willie just isn’t that type of guy.
Also, if Willie does get fired sometime soon you can’t claim this is a panic move as some have been saying. The team has been performing this way for over a year now.
And, as I need to channel my frustration somewhere– how about an off the wall trade proposal? Carlos Beltran and Aaron Heilman for Aaron Rowand and Barry Zito (with SF eating an acceptable portion of Zito’s contract).
At this point Rowand’s numbers are comparable to Beltran’s and he’s got twice the fire—exactly what this team needs. SF gets a new perennial all-star for their fans to build a cult of personality around in the post-Bonds era, and get to save at least a modicum of face by shedding some of Zito’s cotract.
Zito isn’t as bad as he’s pitching and will only get better under Peterson. He’s may be a shell of his former self, but he’d be nice to slot in as a #5 assuming Pedro returns. Vargas goes to the pen and we finally have a viable long-man. If El Duque ever returns he could further solidfy the pen and be waiting in the wings when/if Pedro goes down again.
Of course, there’s at least 2 no trade clauses to get past in that deal. That being said, you watch how quickly Beltran would agree to skip out of NYC and play outside the spotlight. And Zito? I’m relatively confident he’d be happy to come east and work with Peterson. Real or just perceived, talk about a potential white knight for his career.
If for no other reason, we should make this trade just so David Wright can have some friends!
The only man that comes to mind that fits the description is practically royalty in Japan.
Thats a lot of love to walk away from. Who knows, stranger things have happened.
One thing I can tell you, there won’t be any Kids running the Mets anytime soon.
You know what man, I find myself daydreaming about Bobby V too. I can’t imagine it happening as it would take a real set of cajones for the Wilpons to pull the trigger on something like that. If it backfired… jeez, I can’t even imagine what that would be like for them.
However, the only thing that is going to save this season is a bold move, and we don’t have the horses for a bold move in terms of a trade. The only real option is a managerial change.
And it can’t just be a token change. No one among Manuel, Oberkfell, Fergosi, Mazilli, etc. will have the necessary impact. It’s basically only Bobby, Wally or (am I really saying this) Davey.
And, as I’m sure you’ll agree, none of those names have half a chance.
