Here’s a rundown of random thoughts I’m having on this Monday morning.
Every time the Mets collapse is mentioned on television, they always show the guy in the grey away jersey with his rally cap turned sideways and his hands on his head. This guy should receive residual checks for all
the appearances he’s made. The poor guy has become the Bartman of the 2007 Mets and he didn’t even do anything wrong.
This is the first time in awhile that I can remember the Mets getting more press for playing mediocre, yet still being better than the Yankees. I’m not sure what this means. Are the Mets the new Yankees?
I suspect its just because of the Billy Wagner tabloid factor. The Yankees, it seems, are simply boringly bad while the Mets are entertainingly disappointing at the moment.
Can someone explain to me the physics of Carlos Delgado’s overturned home run by the three blind mice at Yankee Stadium last night? How does a ball ricochet the way that ball did without hitting the foul pole? Instant replay would be nice, but maybe a introduction to common sense class for the umpires before each season would be in order. Not that any of you care, but that call really screwed me in fantasy baseball, so I’m extra peeved.
Not to mention the foul pole in left field isn’t even in the right place! ESPN showed that the pole is at least two feet inside of fair territory. Yankee fans, your stadium sucks! I actually believed this for 2 innings and then realized that Joe Morgan said it. Joe Morgan’s perfect streak of never being correct continues.
I’ve heard the rumors of trading Delgado for Richie Sexson, but I can’t wrap my head around wanting to trade Delgado for a player even worse than Delgado. The way Delgado has played over the last season and a quarter, thats really saying something.
I am officially admitting I was wrong about the Lastings Milledge trade. While Milledge may turn out to be a fine player, as I said when they traded him away, Ryan Church has far exceeded my expectations. I figured that Church would be slightly better than Milledge this year but in the long run would be a better player than Church.
I’m starting to believe that being given the chance to play everyday is allowing Church to finally reach his potential. Church is not only one of the Mets best hitters, but he’s also one of the best defensive players they have.
Willie Randolph said that the team meeting didn’t have anything to do with Wagner’s comments but you can read between the lines that it was the straw that broke the camels back, along with a couple of ugly losses to a bad Nationals team.
“I will say this,” he said, “talking to them in this place I found myself getting very emotional, thinking about Thurman, Catfish, Reggie, Lou and all the others and all the winning we did here. We won because we played smart. We played the game right. We hustled. We were accountable to each other and, yeah, we even fought sometimes. It’s all part of the deal. That’s why I was really hoping to play (Friday) night.”
I think Billy Wagner’s comments may have been the best thing that has happened to the Mets this season. Someone needed to light a fire under the collective asses of this team, and Wagner forced the Mets to look in the mirror.

You’re admitting you were wrong after 40 days? Church has certainly exceed expectations, but a prolonged cold streak from one and a lengthy hot streak from the other and they’re even. I don’t want this to happen, but still. 40 days? Give it at least two years.
You’re probrobly right. It will take a few years to properly judge this deal. The early returns go to advantage Church. The Mets are a team trying to win now, and Milledge is still a few years away from reaching his potential, I think.
I thought before this season that Milledge had a higher ceiling than Church, and he still might, but Church has raised the ceiling I had set for him with his consistent bat and spectacular fielding.
