The Mets defeated the Nationals by a score of 4-3 tonight.

The night began with John Maine hitting Nats 2B Felipe Lopez.  The Mets, especially SP Nelson Figueroa, were upset with some unruly cheering from the Nationals bench last night.

The Mets loaded the bases in the 2nd inning after an infield single by Moises Alou, a bunt single by Carlos Delgado and a walk by Damion Easley.  However, the Mets were only able to scrape away one run off a groundout by Brian SchneiderRyan Church went 2-4 with 4 RBIs including his 8th HR of the season.  Church is now batting .324.

John Maine tossed six innings, allowing two runs one of them earned.  Both runs were scored on a HR by 3B Ryan Zimmerman, however Cristian Guzman had reached base on an error by Easley, so the run was not earned.  Matt Wise, making his return from the DL, allowed one run in his one inning of duty.  Duaner Sanchez threw a hitless 8th, setting up Billy Wagner who remains untouchable notching his 8th save of the season.

Lastings Milledge was 0-4 with three K’s and an error.

Tomorrow night, Claudio Vargas makes his Mets debut against Tim Redding at 7:10pm.

Solid game, a nice outing by Maine who looked in control almost the whole night.

As Matt Yallof said after the game, “Ryan Church is the best hitter ever.” He’s really clobbering the ball, and he’s got a cannon for an arm too.

Wagner has been untouchable, hitting his spots in the zone with great stuff.

Oh, and I don’t agree with hitting the leadoff batter, I agree that if Maine decided he should protect Figgy’s feelings hitting somebody is acceptable, but go after Elijah Dukes who was instigating the cheering.  However, I don’t have an issue with their cheering, why aren’t the players allowed to cheer?
