The Mets behind a good start by Nelson Figueroa beat the Brewers tonight as the fog got thicker (and Leon got larger). Figgy tossed four amazing innings of nohit ball, eventually going a full six with just two hits and two runs, both earned. He struck out six and walked only two. Pretty good for a guy that was receiving offers to be a minor league instructor just a few months ago. Smith and Heilman each added an inning of scoreless relief, and Billy Wagner gets the Save in his third appearance of the year. It was his first save of the season.
The Mets bats put up eight hits, none of which were for extra bases, as the team celebrated Singles Friday at Shea. Angel Pagan continues to earn his keep, 2 for 4 with an RBI. He now has 10 RBIs for the season. David Wright was the only other multihit Met, getting two singles of his own. In his Met debut, Raul Casanova had one hit, a single to score Delgado in the three run fourth inning. Beltran walked twice. We shall not mention Jose Reyes.
Well the lack of extra base hits isn’t exactly good, and there were two Met GIDP, but the pitching is the main thing tonight. The bullpen was good, no hits, walks or runs. The big mystery man Figgy proved he can perform on a MLB level, even when facing a team who channels the mystical powers of bratwurst to win. Now we just have to wait for hopefully good news on Jose Reyes, who left with an injury as noted earlier. A middle infield of Marlon Anderson and Easley is not quite so good defensively as a middle infield of Castillo and Reyes. We could probably switch Reyes and Castillo and still have a better middle infield. Come on Jose, stop mimicking Jeter.
