Sure, if the Yanks or Red Sox had ended up making a trade, we never would've got Santana. But the Twins ended up taking a relatively poor grouping of prospects for Santana. Would they really have taken an even lesser trade if we had passed? My only point is that we don't know all the various scenarios the GMs discussed when making this deal. I can certainly imagine some of them where Santana ended up a free agent at the end of 2008. I'm not saying it would've happened for sure, just that it was a possibility.

I don't think its fair to say they could have got Santana without making a trade. The Red Sox and the Yankees would not have made a trade without being assured they could sign him.

Without the trade, Johan is an ace somewhere else for the next 6+ years.

"The upside was, we could’ve potentially landed Santana and kept our four prospects. "

This is the inference that led to my 3rd graph.

It's not a bad deal at all it's a fleecing. You've added the best lefty in baseball for 3 players who wouldn't have cracked the major league roster and a role player. Yes they are young, but with Omar's ability to bring in and sign young latin players, we should be able to retool quickly. I mean look at the Yankees, they had ZERO prospects 2-3 years ago and now have a good core of young players.

You have to spend money on signing young players and thanks to the stadium, energy surrounding the team with Johan, and TV they should be able to. Tony Pena's kid is a great young catching prospect and he signed with us over the Sox and Yankees. That should tell you something.

I don;t like the idea of saying we could have waited and signed him in the off season and kept our prospects. That's inaccurate. Johan wouldn't have stayed in Minny because they knew he wouldn't sign, so the Twins had to deal him or risk losing him for nothing.

Omar got it done, and I feel a lot better knowing he's brought a guy in who can stop losing streaks every time he steps on the rubber.

Well...what will be CLEAR happens come September.

If there is anything more important to me than the Mets winning the championship, it is that they play with every drop of energy and courage they can muster, and that they play like a genuine team. That's what they didn't have last year.

If Santana Claus can help make a feared esprit d'corps on this team, he will define what it means to be a superstar and have one on a team. There's a lot more to it than wins, low ERA, strikeouts, etc.
