In a blog for Fox Sports, Birk writes an informative post discussing this off season’s moves in the NL East. He writes:
I’m not very impressed with the off season moves in the NL East. I think every single one except the Nationals has taken a step back.
He later profiles each team, and he concludes his section on the Mets with:
Moving past that, do they have enough starting pitching? Will Pedro Martinez and Orlando Hernandez stay healthy? Will Oliver Perez remain effective? Will Mike Pelfrey and Philip Humber step up to claim the fifth spot and provide insurance against one of the other rotation members? That’s a lot of question marks. With the pending return of Duaner Sanchez, the signing of Matt Wise, and most of last year’s bullpen returning, the Mets should consider moving Aaron Heilman back to a starting role. All considered though, they still have a strong shot at winning the division.
Informative post, worth checking out. I really do agree that Heilman should be given another shot at the rotation, if and only if the Mets were to sign a guy like Octavio Dotel who could competently fill his spot. Sure Duaner might be able to do that, but with so much uncertainty in the rotation, you don’t want to place all your bets on a guy returning from shoulder surgery.

Sounds pretty good…..
I think that the so called “experts” are making too much of this…..
Braves: They Lost Renteria, Andruw Jones, and their closer in Wickman.
Now, they traded away a possible future closer for a Journeyman OF.
Yes, they have upgraded their Rotation slightly with the acquisition on Jurjins and Glavine, but as the Mets, the youngster isn’t proven. Glavine slowed down dramatically last year and I can’t see him winning more than 10 games with the lack of Run Support he’s going to get in Atlanta as opposed to New York espechially losing their # 2 and #4 hitter
Phillies: While the same team is pretty much returning, I feel they lost a significant part of the Bullpen by losing Myers to the Rotation. I feel with Myers Nerves, he floruished in that role last year before he got hurt.
Lidge is a head case, ever since Pujols hit that HR that still hasn’t landed yet, he hasn’t been the same pitcher, twice losing his Closer Role last year.
They lost their 4th OF in Bourn and it’ll be tough to combat that with Taguchi as a replacement. They need a 3B which has been a problem since they traded Rolen, and then traded Polanco, who may be one of the best hitters in the MLB now, so can they score? Yes, but other than Hamels and Myers, I am not scared of that rotation.
Marlins: I feel even though they traded their 2 best players, they got a value package back. Pending they live up to their potential.
Maybin is a quick smart hitter, who plays great D. He’ll fit right in at CF and has the potential to be Hanley II
Andrew Miller, I feel will be a stud, he’s got good stuff and in that pitchers ball park may win 12-13 games for a team that will only win 60-70 games this year
Cantu will surprise alot of people.
Nationals: Prob as agreed, the only team that did get significantly better this year
Milledge, I think he will be another player that Met fans will cringe every time we hear how good he is (See Scott Kazmir)
Dukes, Lo Duca, Clippard, Nick Johnson returning
They will be tough games all year
Leaves us with the Mets
We acquired Ryan Church and Brian Schneider
Hated to part w/Milledge, but these will be solid pieces to an already solid team. Church, I feel will have a solid year, Great D and a good #6 or #7 hitter
They added Stokes, Wise, and Register to the BP which has got to be better than Sele and Mota. Yikes!!
Maybe they’ll try Heilman in the BP, sign Dotel and finally get this going….
I think the biggest wildcard of the offseason in the NL East is Lidge. He could be the gem of the year, or just implode again.
Overall, it’s tough to really predict what’s going to happen….
Pedro can come back to form, win 15 games and be healthy all year and lead the Mets to the Title. Perez can harness his Electric Stuff, win 20 games, strikeout 250+ batters and have an ERA under 3.00 and start Game 1 of the World Series. Maine goes 16-8 with comparisons to Bret Saberhagen (in his KC days)
Wagner comes back to be the lights out closer he was last year. Pelfrey comes out and becomes the next Verlander and the Mets look pretty good for the next few years.
Mulvey = Kevin Slowey
Guerra = Liriano
Humber = Haren
I like it!!
C: Schneider
1B: Delgado
2B: Castillo
3B: Wright
SS: Reyes
LF: Alou
CF: Beltran
RF: Church
I like it!!
I like the thought…but me thinks you are getting your hopes a wee bit too high
