Ken Rosenthal on Fox Sports reports that, according to his sources, Johan Santana will not waive his no trade clause during the regular season, which means its now or never for them to deal Santana.
The Twins would receive two draft picks if Santana remains with the team in 2008 and leaves via free agency.
The Yankees are threatening to pull their offer by the end of day tomorrow. Newsday quotes Hank Steinbrenner
“The Twins are aware of it, that I’m not going to wait much longer. And the truth of the matter is, they don’t want to be stuck with only one team to deal with. If they’re stuck with just Boston, they’re going to get a lot less. I’m not going to be played. This is not a game. This is serious business. I’m not going to be played, us against the Red Sox. That’s not going to happen.”
The Yankee offer consists of Philip Hughes, Melky Cabrera and a third player if the Twins do not accept early this week. The third player could be Triple-A SS Alberto Gonzales or Double-A RHP Alan Horne.
The Red Sox are offering Jon Lester or center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury along with shortstop Jed Lowrie. Coco Crisp would also be included if the Twins chose Lester, and not Ellsbury.
The Seattle Times is reporting that the Mariners may be entering the Santana sweepstakes this week as well, but likely do not have the chips to make it happen.
