Joe Christensen in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune confirms Sid Hartman’s report that the Twins offered Johan Santana a five-year, $93MM deal (18.6MM annually).
According to Christensen, Santana countered the offer, asking for $126MM over seven years.
The Twins have refused the counteroffer and expect to trade Santana.
Michael Silverman in the Boston Herald writes that the Red Sox may offer Coco Crisp, Clay Buchholz or Jon Lester, and a third solid prospect might be their proposal. The Yanks may offer Melky Cabrera and Phil Hughes, while the Mets would start with Carlos Gomez.
However other reports state that the Sox are not willing to offer Lester or Buchholz, and the Yankees are unwilling to part with Phil Hughes.
Christensen’s notes that the Twins have swapped offers with closer Joe Nathan as well. Nathan is expected to command in the neighborhood of four years, $40 million.
