The agent for free agent catcher Yorvit Torrebella told 1050 ESPN New York’s Andrew Marchand this afternoon that Mets GM Omar Minaya told him he will be submitting Torrealba a contract offer shortly.
Melvin Roman, Torrealba’s agent, says he expects the offer to be a mulityear deal.
Ben Shpigel, in the New York Times predicted the deal could be worth $5 million annually. Torrealba made $1.075 million last season. The Marlins reportedly are unwilling to go beyond $7 million for two years.
Torrealba ranked 21st among 29 qualifying catchers, according to Stats LLC, throwing out 17.6 percent (13 of 74). Lo Duca ranked a notch above him at 19.1 percent (17 of 89).
Shpigel points out that Torrealba batted .292 at Coors and only .212 on the road.
Move on Omar, I don’t see any good reason to sign Torrealba over Lo Duca.
